Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mosquito fruits??
« on: October 16, 2017, 10:44:58 PM »
probably. anything that can hold some water and they'll breed. been in invasion of mosquitoes in the SGV area for the past 2 years. gone are the days of just going out in shorts and tshirt and not get bit.

the most vicious are the tiger mosquitoes. those SOB follow you into the house whenever they can and bite all day long.

I get over 60 gallons of fruit a year pickers use ladders and i made a picker/shaker pole  also new deck is 17 feet from the ground so i can use my pole to shake the top of the tree tarps or sheets of plastic on the ground catch most of the fruit .       Patrick

i need to see a picture of this! that sounds like some serious business. haha.

greenman62 - thanks for the help. definitely happy that it fruited this year for like a 15ft tree (need ladders to reach the top) finally after like who knows how many years. was just curious to get an idea of what it could be just to know. but help from members here and using that info for more research is pretty educational too.

Yes, top work it and graft on the varieties you like to eat.

Are the mume fruits good? Maybe consider bringing cuttings to your local scion exchange where you can pick up other varieties of stone fruits. These happen in mid-Jan/Feb around LA.

You actually missed a pretty good graywater presentation this morning at the arboretum in Arcadia.

was the presentation part of the crfg? i'll have to pay more attention to the events then.

the ume plums i don't think you can just eat them. they're mostly used to make umeboshi....lots of pickling involved. i rather have something edible and i can't imagine removing the tree.

local scion exchange...is that also part of crfg?

another question....going with the grafting idea...i assume i could cut the branches down almost to the trunk and then graft whatever variety i'm looking at from that point on?

We have this mature ume plum tree. Fruits like crazy but we just don’t have a use for ume plums.  My mom used to make umeboshi with them.

I don’t even want it to be removed due to the age and size of it. Could I top work it down and graft it then? i thought maybe with all the expert grafters here on the forum that someone could give me an idea of what i can do with a tree this size.

@johnb51 - Fuerte yes. haha.

pinkerton hmm. i'll research more about it and compare some more pictures to see.

@gregA - yea...these are REALLY OLD trees....way older than i am now and the trunks i have to stretch to wrap my arms around some of them. had issues with some sprinklers and etc so it's taken a few years for it to start to recover again.

i'll go take some more pics of the 3rd one in more detail when i get back.

These 3 varieties.  Assuming the left one is a Fuentes.  The other two not exactly sure.  Thought maybe middle was haas. But wife says it doesn’t taste like the ones she gets from the market.  It has a more pebbly skin.

@spaugh - thanks! yea...strong smell when it's more whiteish not green. crunchy flesh but softens in the fridge. i'll go now and do some more research on mexican guavas. thanks for the possible id! let me know how that taste test goes! can never have too many guavas...

looks like inside is like a tomato cage? and the bars are support beams (daiso or homedepot has them) to help give it more support...but the top portion i'm not too sure. one of the picture looks like iron pipes? the first picture is what..a bike tire of somesorts?  ;D

looks great! more information on how you built the structures?

how far apart are you guys here in socal planting the mango trees from each other?  i read that our climate here does limit growth (so not like the huge mango trees i see in every yard in hawaii when i was there haha).

it's white inside. here's a pic of the inside along with some of the tree itself if that helps!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava ID?
« on: October 01, 2017, 01:34:25 AM »
hi there,

after many years, my mom's guava tree finally fruited. unfortunately she's not around anymore for me to ask her what kind of guava she had planted. So if there's any guava experts out there that can help me ID this guava, i would greatly appreciate it.

thanks!
