MANGO pruning/grafting advice needed please
« on: October 26, 2019, 12:28:58 AM »
Hello, I was given this manilla mango tree from my neighbor the other day and would like to graft better varities onto it. It's about 6ft tall. Can someone PLEASE provide some advice, suggestions, comments, pro-tips, etc. on how to go about grafting this tree? Is this the right time of year to graft mango? Should I leave the tree the height it is now? What part of the tree should I graft onto? Basically, what would you do if this was your tree? I plan on putting it in the ground asap. All comments are GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Basically you need to cut those two long stems near to the bifurcation and graft the new shoots pointing out, best time for that here is from last spring to last summer.

I wouldn't keep the branch to the right. The crotch angle is acute and likely to break, a close angle like that also tends to have bark inclusion inside which leads to a weak point. Look around after a storm and you can see how those branches break off.
