Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Star Suriname Cherry opinions please
« on: December 25, 2017, 09:44:03 AM »
This should be in the "tropical" part of the forum, so you may want to re-post there.

Suriname cherry gets a bad rap because many places grow them from seed as landscaping hedges.  So, the ones planted in most people's yards taste like gasoline.  There are a few select varieties that some people like.  Zill's Black (or Zill's Dark depending on who you ask) is probably the best Suriname though.

Check out Cherry of the Rio Grande as well.

How do you remove the spines on the fruit?

Dioon Spinulosum?  Sounds like what you are describing.

Hi Sonny, nice pics beautiful palm, I see some differences the one I'm talking about doesn't have toothed leaves, also the pinne is different the one you posted doesn't have the orange balls kind of jackfruit inside.

Sounds good.  Do you have any pictures of the plants?

Cool report Raul.  A rare cycad is still a good find.

Really, I thought Charleston was pretty close to the coast?

About 2 years ago, I moved to a little town called Summerville, SC.  It's about a 35 minute drive NW of Charleston.  More inland.

I've seen a few decent sized trees in downtown Charleston on the peninsula.  But that's got it's own climate being nearly surrounded by water near the ocean.  There's even an "Orange Street" on the peninsula where there used to be an Orange grove long ago, but the story was the grove was killed one winter and never replanted.  It's all developed now though.

I've also seen one decent sized grapefruit tree on James Island, but nothing inland.

My neighbor's big "ligustrums" have grapefruit!   :o. It's extremely rare to see anyone else around here with citrus trees planted outside, especially this size and unprotected in a zone 8a/b border area.  In fact, no one I know of has in-ground citrus around here.  The trees are pretty large with trunks probably 7" across.  I'm just amazed I've never noticed them before and that they survive unprotected.

Citrus General Discussion / Graft refusing to push
« on: November 28, 2017, 04:49:44 PM »
I did an inverted t-bud of Golden Nugget on 9-17-17.  It healed up well, so I broke the top of the tree over pretty quickly, but now it's just sitting there refusing to grow.  The rootstock has tried to send out some growth above and below the GN a couple of times, but I have broken them off before they could get going.

The tree was in a shady area while it initially recovered, but now it is in my winter grow room.  Temps staying between 70 and 90F.  Any suggestions guys?

I think you pretty much have to graft your own Avri, unless you live close enough to get one from Adam.

I emailed Adam months ago about getting one, but couldn't get a response.  I did catch him on the forum not too long ago and asked about coming by, but he said he doesn't allow visitors anymore because he doesn't like dealing with people and his dog jumps on visitors' cars.  I ended up buying a Champagne loquat elsewhere instead.  Maybe Avri will be more widely available in the future.

Just from reading here, the consensus seems to be that Avri (Avril?) Is the best.  They are hard to find though.  Do you know someone selling them?

Another thing to watch out for as winter approaches is watering with extremely cold water.  It can shock your tree and cause leaf drop, if I'm remembering correctly.

Yeah...Most of the seedlings I have are Lucs seedlings from this year.  I bought a couple of lemon drop mangosteens for rootstock as well and they are about the right size.  But they cost me a fortune for how small they are.

I did try a couple of z-grafts, since I read that was a good option for odd sized scion/rootstock combinations.  I'm not very hopeful though.

I would take the fruit off, like you said.  The tree might not be getting enough light or be warm enough to start growing again.  How cold does it get at night?  I might just keep an eye on it and make sure I'm not over-watering.  Nip it back a little bit, if you like.  But I'm always afraid to trim back too much when trees drop leaves like this.  Keep an eye on the buds to see if they start swelling up.

Has anybody had success rooting cuttings of Garcinias?

I have a bunch of cuttings of Luc's garcinia, but they are much bigger than my seedling rootstock.  How difficult are they to root?

Not at all.  My parents' farm in South Carolina (zone 8a) had a bunch of them.  They go well below freezing.

Might want to try going to the big fruit tree sales. I know manatee county rare fruit council has brings out a lot of interesting stuff. http://www.mrfc.org/p/fruit-tree-sale.html

There are a few people in FL growing atemoya but usually don't graft/ sell scions until Feb/march. I have a couple of grafted dream trees. I got seedlings and budwood from Flying fox fruits. I know he has a few other varieties of annona and might be selling scions in the spring. There are a hand full of other growers in south FL who are growing interesting Atemoya. Best of luck, if you really get hard up you can have scions shipped from CA.

Adam at Flying Fox doesn't let people come by anymore.  He doesn't seem to be responding to emails either, but he still does the Manatee Council fruit tree sale.  I hear it's nuts trying to buy anything there.  I've heard you have to be there when the doors open and it's a complete madhouse.  Also trees there are marked up to pay for the venue.

Cool.  I'm a big passiflora fan.

My p. Edulis fruits hung and kept maturing under the first frost.  I probably would have done better to pick them the day before, since some of the fruits were burned by the frost.

You can get a dream annona from Wayne Clifton.  I think he does a few of the big Florida plant sales, so you can catch him there or set up a time to go by his house and pick one up.  I picked up two small dream trees from him this Spring.

Orange Sherbet. One mango to rule them all.

Who were the Orange Sherbet trees licensed to?  Any idea when they will be released?
