I'm retired and my kids are out of the house so the Mrs and I are looking to downsize to a smaller place. I would much rather sell it to someone that will appreciate the fruit trees and grove. The Zillow listing https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/4910-SW-205th-Ave-Southwest-Ranches-FL-33332/43129265_zpid/ tells about our house so here's all the tree information.  If anyone would like more specific information PM me.

I though this was a pretty interesting article about growing/bringing back an extinct species of date palm from a unbelievably still viable 2000 year old seed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mature Mango Trees Without Bloom 2016
« on: March 10, 2016, 09:54:19 PM »
Its been a slow start and very late mango bloom season in my yard this year due to the wet and mild winter weather in South Florida. While walking my yard this morning I noticed everything is now blooming or starting too bloom except for one lone unexpected holdout. A mature and usually productive 20+ foot tall Tong-Bi-Con (Ivory) mango tree. Before anyone asks, it was not pruned last year and seems healthy. As its a Thai type mango I'm hoping it may fruit off season although it has never done that before.

I'm wondering if anyone else has any mature trees that decided to take this year off and what type they are?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Stinkbugs on a Bearing Lychee Tree
« on: May 17, 2015, 11:18:45 AM »
Normally I don't have many insect issues so I mostly let the trees fend for themselves. This morning I noticed a lot of these two types of bugs on my bearing Kaimana Lychee tree. I'm guessing the little red ones are baby/larval weevils? The fruit are almost ready to harvest should I treat for them now or wait until the lychee are harvested? Any advice on how to best control, chemicals, etc...?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coconut In Muck
« on: March 29, 2015, 09:58:06 AM »
I have a mounded area in the rear of my yard that is close to a neighbors water treatment system drain so the surrounding ground gets some salt runoff. The ground under the mound itself is a rich dark muck soil. How do coconut palms do planted in this type of soil? Most of what I have read about coconuts recommend a well draining sandy soil, which this is not.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Broward Garden Supplies
« on: March 07, 2015, 09:31:48 AM »
My tropical fruit trees are getting pretty large so purchasing garden supplies like copper, sulfur, foliar spray is getting expensive at Home Depot due to the volume used. I'm looking for a supply store in the Broward area with commercial size packages of these products, anyone have any recommendations?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Powered Tree Sprayer Suggestions
« on: February 08, 2015, 08:12:17 PM »
My trees are getting too tall to easily spray with a backpack pump sprayer or hose end type sprayer. Does anyone have any suggestions for either a battery or gas powered type tree sprayer that has good range and coverage?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Flexible Galaxy Mango Tree
« on: September 30, 2014, 09:41:07 AM »
I have a Galaxy mango tree purchased last spring as a small 3 gallon tree that seems to be growing very leggy and is almost bendable. Other then that the tree itself seems healthy and has had several nice growth spurts over this summer. I recently transplanted it from the original three gallon pot into a larger 10 gallon pot. Without propping it up it almost bends all the way down. My solution was to put a large tomato cage around it that I'll remove once it gets larger and can stand without extra support. The roots are firmly planted it just seems that the tree itself is very leggy and flexible. Am I missing something, does it need some type of special nutrient? Anyone else with a Galaxy tree notice the same attributes?

I have a good problem  ;D,  with a few of my mango trees this spring. Some of the lower branches are weighed down from the weight of fruit, causing the fruit to touch the ground. In past years I have wrapped the panticle around a higher branch with some success. This year the low branches are just too long and it won't work well. In the past I have also used rope tied to prop up low heavy branches.

How does everyone else keep their low hanging fruit off the ground, what do you use and how?

A lesson Learned...When I first started growing mango trees I used to prune new trees to start branching at about 2-3 feet up. That makes for a low compact tree but causes these low hanging fruit issues. For the last 3-4 years I  have been pruning new trees so that they branch at about 4 plus feet. That works a lot better for me so that I can get under the tree for weeding, mowing, etc...and don't have these very low hanging fruit near the ground.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Germinating Green Sapote Seeds
« on: April 08, 2014, 01:54:04 PM »
I had a few Green Sapote fruits several weeks ago and on the same day eating them, I  planted the seeds in some small 1 gallon pots about an inch deep. I have been watering them each morning so the soil has been kept moist (not wet.) Nothing has germinated yet and its been several weeks, how long do the seeds normally take to germinate? whats the usual germination rate for GS? Is anything else or are there other steps needed for germinating GS?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona Pruning and Leaf Pulling Results
« on: April 06, 2014, 02:21:07 PM »
A few weeks ago I saw a post on pruning and pulling leaves off Annona's to make them bloom. I posted a question on doing that to my two shy bearing Annona trees. Based on positive responses from several members, I pruned and removed all the leaves from my Lisa Atemoya and Sugar Apple trees. Its now a few weeks later and the results are amazing. The flowers are literally popping out everywhere on the Lisa Atemoya and I'm hopeful for the same to begin soon on the Sugar Apple. Thanks for the good advice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Late Mango Bloom
« on: April 03, 2014, 08:26:35 PM »
I was very pleasantly surprised when walking my yard to see that several mango trees are pushing fresh blooms so late in the season, now April 3. My Sunrise mango tree that I had given up on for the year has just started pushing out bloom. The Tong Bi Con tree is now in full bloom. The larger VP tree just started its bloom a week or two ago, yet not even 100 feet away my smaller VP tree is long done blooming and is now holding many peanut size fruit? The Carrie tree is sending out fresh blooms where ever the prior ones did not set fruit, so it has a few golf ball size fruit, more marble size fruit and now new blooms. The Rosigold has mature fruit on it and is still putting out new bloom with everything in between. All of my other trees bloomed at the normal time in January, February and March. We just started eating ripe Rosigold fruit this week, I'm hoping for a long extended mango season.

Anyone else having very late blooms on their mango trees, what varieties?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizing Mango Trees With Fruit on Them
« on: March 30, 2014, 12:06:41 PM »
I'm wondering everyone's experience/thoughts about fertilizing bearing mango trees while they have fruit developing on them? The last few years I have  avoided fertilizing or spraying minors on my mango trees while they have fruit developing and have just waited until after harvest with good results. I recall reading somewhere that fertilizing with fruit on the tree can cause jelly seed and or fruit drop issues, is that accurate?

The reason I'm asking is I have a 12-14 foot Graham tree loaded with marble sized fruit that really needs a spraying with minors. I'm pretty sure it's deficient in zinc and magnesium. Should I spray it now or wait a few months?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Small Pace Mamey Blooming
« on: January 07, 2014, 04:47:52 PM »
While walking my yard this morning I noticed that my 5 foot tall Pace Mamey Sapote has started to bloom. Its only been in the ground since last year and is still kind of small so I'm not getting my hopes up that it will hold any fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Late Second Bloom Mangos
« on: September 09, 2013, 01:09:16 PM »
This past season I had a few of my mango trees put out a very late second and even third bloom. Its now mid September and I'm harvesting Graham, Kent, Maha Chanok, and Tong Bi Con mangoes. I'm hoping to go into mid-October with fruit still on the trees. Yet my "latest variety" Neelam has been done since August... ??? A very strange but long lasting season.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Some Firsts
« on: July 22, 2013, 08:06:02 PM »
The flooding in my yard receded enough today that I was able to make it to the rear of the yard where I found a very nice surprise. My Maha Chanok Mango tree had two ripe fruits and my Coconut Cream Mango had a ripe fruit as well. These fruit are the very first from these trees, I'm very excited to try them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dried Mango Varieties
« on: June 23, 2013, 08:00:22 PM »
I have been running my food dehydrator every night over the past couple of weeks drying freshly picked mango. Certain varieties seem to dry and taste better then other ones. So far the best overall tasting dried varieties for me have been Nam Doc Mai and Angie. I'm wondering what other types dry well?

I saw this posted on the Miami Dade Fruit and Spice Facebook page.  I'll see everyone there.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sapodilla Binge
« on: March 23, 2013, 03:15:44 PM »
My Alano Sapodilla has been very productive over the last couple of weeks giving us ripe fruit daily. We have really, really, been enjoying the fruit this season to the point of now craving more and more of it. In fact we have been enjoying so much we just planted two more Sapodilla trees, a Silas Wood and a Hasya tree. I have tried the Hasya Sap at Harry's and loved it. Decided on a SW Sap from what I have read about it, sounds very different and interesting.

My five year old Alano Tree.

3 gallon Silas Wood tree (small, but we have high hopes for it)

7 gallon Hasya Tree

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rootbound Avocado
« on: March 17, 2013, 05:36:37 PM »
When I first moved into my house about 5 years ago we purchased a larger size (15 gallon pot) Russell Avocado tree with the intention of jumpstarting the garden and getting Avocados quickly. The tree seemed to do fine for the first few months in the ground and then declined and lost most of its leaves. I was able to bring it back but the tree afterwards limped along for the next few years without growing much or showing vigor. We finally got a few Avocados off it last year and they were ok, not really good but just ok. Based on the trees overall poor condition and the Avocados being lackluster we dug it up today. Once we had it out of the ground and saw its roots I realised why it has been doing so poorly since being planted, it was rootbound. The roots were tightly spun around in a circle and looked ike a wrapped up turban.  I'm sorry about losing this tree but glad not to waste more years on a hopeless sick tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Cultivars and Powdery Mildew
« on: January 05, 2013, 04:29:21 PM »
I'm wondering which mango cultivars are the most and least resistant to powdery mildew. What is everyones experince?

My Carrie tree seems to have very low resistance to PM, last season it lost its entire crop to (caught it to late to save...) PM. This year I have been spraying it with sulfar, so hopefully the tree does better. None of my other mango varietes seem to have PM problems at least not on that scale.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit Planting Times
« on: October 06, 2012, 09:17:13 PM »
I have two small (2-3 foot) healthy grafted Jackfruit trees now in 3 gallon containers. One is a Borneo Red, that I understand is extra cold sensitive while small. I'm trying to decide if I should plant them in the ground now or upsize them to larger pots and then in spring plant them in the ground. What do you think is the better option?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Everbearing Sapodilla
« on: September 17, 2012, 02:56:09 PM »
I have been picking Sapodilla fruit off my Alano tree since late last winter including a few just today. The tree still has lots of new bloom and various sizes of developing fruit on it. One thing I have noticed is the late summer/fall fruit appear to be more thin and long versus the spring/early summer fruit that were almost round. Needless to say...I'm real happy with the tree over the last year its pretty much become an everbearing tree that always has fruit ready to pick. Anyone else have a Sapodilla tree thats bearing this way?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First Solo Grafting of JackFruit
« on: August 05, 2012, 12:05:56 PM »
Yesteday, I attended a tropical fruit tree grafting class at the Fairchild Farm and did my first solo graft. I did a side veneer graft of Black Gold Jackfruit that hopefully takes...The "tree" is now in the shade in a clear plastic bag awaiting signs of scion growth. I'm not real familar with Jackfruit varietes, what is everyones opinion on the Blackgold variety?
