Instead of buying two refractometers, one of 0 - 30% and another of 0 - 60%,  buy one of 0 - 30% and another of 30 - 60%. Would give better resolution thru out the range. This is what I used to use.

You have to remove the flower bracts? one by one until they  are pale yellow. The maroon ones are very astringent and bitter. Once you arrive at the pale yellow, you should cut it into thin slices of 1/8 th inch thick. Then you saute it with some chopped chillies, garlic and ginger, with necessary salt and water. Cook on a low flame for about 10 minutes. Season it with mustard, chopped dry chillies and curry leaves in a little oil.

The flavour is similar to mangosteen but not that sweet.

Dear friends, Sorry for not replying earlier, but I live in a place where i cannot get an internet connection. So I have to wait till I come to my Home in Calicut. The fruit is on a seedling tree I bought from a nursery about six years ago. I had bought two seedlings and the fruits  on both the trees are sweet. The fruits are quite sweet!! I got 10 fruits from one tree and 2 fruits from the other. But I got only 6 seeds! May be next year I will have a better crop, with seeds to spare.Chandramohan.

A green frog on my Mangosteen tree!

692
Thanks everybody. I have two more in the ground. I straightened out mine after the second set of leaves came out skewed, by tying it to a post planted close to the stem. I had stopped making grafts, after all the information on the Internet saying it would be still about 9 years before fruiting. Now I am going to graft more seedlings!!

693
It is grafted on to Mangosteen rootstock.

« on: April 11, 2016, 02:00:23 AM »
Thanks everybody. The seedlings are growing in plastic bags of 1.5 gal, in potting soil containing coir pith. The temp here during the day goes up to 91 o F for the past almost one month, and night time temp is around 80 o F. Since it is very dry here I have been watering the seedlings every day. I have not used any fertilizer yet. I am attaching photos taken yesterday.

This year I managed to sprout about 25 pawpaw seedlings last month. After putting out 5 or 6 leaves the terminal shoot is drying. The seedlings are all kept in shade. Now what could be wrong? Can they be saved? Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks,Chandramohan.
