does a single leaf count ?
and this is strange, because last year, i noticed the same thing.
1 leaf (no, not the same leaf, it defoliated last winter)

Yes that leaf is variegated, but if there are only one or two leaves on the tree, they will be barely noticeable.

People pay big bucks for the variegated varieties because the coloration pattern of the foliage is so striking

Some of the trees that are sold as variegated easily revert to all green, or all white.

A stable, evenly distributed variegated pattern is what you want.

Yeah it could look better, just moved it to a new spot as it was my only neglected tree. Should take off now.

why have I never seen a variegated Surinam Cherry?  Has anyone ever seen one?  It's such a common plant, you'd think it would be easy to find?

I was pulling weeds near my front door, and spotted this variegated Eugenia uniflora growing through the cracks in my pavers!

what are the chances the one time i've seen a variegated pitanga, that it would be growing between the cracks on my porch, and impossible to uproot without causing harm?!

i wanted to pull up the paver, but it was set in concrete.....I had to pull the plant up, and it snapped in half...i grafted the top of the plant that snapped off, and planted the lower half with the roots....

I doubt the variegation will hold, but it's worth a shot!

Nice, Adam. I hope the graft will take and the other half will survive. That stubborn variegated sapodilla is doing the same as the previous ones, it's not going to survive this time too. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I should probably try a different grafting technique. What do you think?

maybe it has to do with timing of when i'm taking scions??  sorry to hear this Galka...I will keep providing you with scions/rootstock until you get one to take...and I will eventually try to graft some again.

Thank you,  Adam. Maybe it's better to take scions when the plant starts to push new buds? Water it good prior taking scions? Also, next time I will take all the leaves off and wrap it with the clear tape then graft.

I'm not sure if that will help, because I never could get takes when I defoliated the scions, the only success I've had is when I bag them

I should try to root them in water. Ones I almost got it but the scion was too small I think and it failed after pushing new leaves. How is the variegated Grimal doing?

variegated Grimal is same size, barely growing, not dead, but not any growth really...I won't be surprised if it reverts to all green or just dies.

Hey Everyone,
When this thread started, I ooh-ed and ah-ed at the spectacular anomalies of the plant world. I wished I had something spectacular to add too. Well, I ordered a big order of seeds from Maryoto in the Winter (one of the best seed guys in the world), and my seeds arrived fresh and ready to be sown. I plopped my seeds in cups full of soil and put them on a heat mat, with little baggies on each cup to trap humidity. As the month went on, my seeds started to germinate. One cup in particular germinated 3 seeds. Now, I am pretty sure these are Dimocarpus Melisanus, but it's possible it is Nephelium Mainganyi, because I shifted a couple cups. Stupidly, I lost track of what was what, but I'm pretty sure it's Dimocarpus.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I finally repotted the 3 sprouts, and because I never removed the baggie I never got a good look at the seedlings. I could see a bit, and thought some of the leaves were sun damaged from being in the window ... when I removed the baggie lo-and-behold one of the seedlings wasn't sun burned at all. It's variegated. Finally, I have something to share on this thread. Enjoy. It may be the only one. :)

Adam, could you please remind me the name of this little tree. The tag is missing again (I blame squirrels  :D ). It was blooming all summer, never set the fruit, and it's going to bloom again. There are some suckers on a side.  :)

Galka,

that is a crazy looking pitanga...i believe it was one of the smooth type...

i planted a bunch of seeds, and that one turned out to be the runt...

it seriously stayed less than 4 inch tall for about 2yr...or maybe longer...

then I gave it to you, because it wasn't dead yet, and it didn't look horrible...lol I like to give weird plants to customers, as a gift as they're leaving sometimes...If i kept it...it probably would have died....

i hope u get some fruit set soon, and it taste pretty good...

keep us posted.

Variegated Elaeaocarpus sp. Maybe it is Goumi? Has not fruited yet. Not sure, don't have any other Goumi plants to compare leaves. Maybe somebody with Goumi plants can tell me?

One of my Jackfruit seedlings is showing some variegation, in a few leaves. It would be great if could hold this, but by the last one it put out, I don't think it will keep the variegation; anyway, I'm posting just fro the record.

Update... The Smooth Pitanga is still super dwarf looking plant. It's flovering almost year around but doesn't hold fruits. Sending root suckers, 2 so far.
