Morado Avocado

Anyone growing this variety? Picked up a tree at Lara Farms today but I’m unable to find any information on it.

Isn't it a Lara Farms exclusive?  What did they tell you about it?

It may be, and they did tell me anything about it. My bad, I didn’t ask, but I also wasn’t expecting info to be so scarce. Will probably call on Monday to see what I can find out, but still very interested in any comments/experiences from the forum.

A little bit of gardening advice.  I'm not some cranky know-it-all so please don't take it the wrong way.  I would say it's best to do your homework BEFORE buying and planting a tree.  That way you won't have any regrets a few years down the road, and you'll have exactly the fruit you were hoping for.  I know it's common sense, but sometimes we need to be reminded.  (Do I sound like Mr. Rogers, or something?)

You do not sound like Mr. Rogers (who I grew up loving, btw), and believe it or not, I do know this. Have planted, then pulled, more than my share in my short 6ish years of this obsession hobby learning this lesson.
Also wasn’t looking to buy an avocado. But this one was growing so beautifully and I love the shape of it, call it an impulse buy! I’m not much of an avocado person, worst case scenario my coworkers will surely appreciate it.  :)

I get the impulse buying.  I've done it myself when I've seen a beautiful plant or tree!

John, I’m sure you only said what many think, at least you were nice about it.  ;)

Preliminary reply received from Lara Farms:
“It’s one of our house varieties. I describe it as the purple Simonds”
Going back for more info. *fingers crossed*

I read it may be grown in Cuba, hence the name perhaps.
Still hard to believe no one is growing/familiar with this variety.  Holding out hope for some feedback from the forum.

So if he calls it a purple Simmonds, that's good!  I had a Simmonds tree before I sold my house.  I like the variety very much especially since it ripens in August when good avocados are hard to find.  It's a solid West Indian avocado, not a lot of oil, but still a nice texture and decent flavor.

Sorry but what is purple? The skin or flesh? Thank's!

Luis, From what little info I’ve been able to find, I think the skin will tend towards purple color, not the fruit. My tree is a 7 gallon, and I did not see a mature tree, so I can’t say from experience.  Maybe I can report back in a few years with an update.  :D

Yes, I saw a picture of that one during my research, kind of odd looking IMO. I doubt that’s what this is, I expect if a purple flesh avocado was being grown in South Florida the news would have gotten around!  ;)

I read several of your previous comments about Simmonds, very encouraging indeed.  ;D

Thanks, I speak Spanish, so I did know that, but didn’t think about it when I was picking the tree. I’m not a big avocado person, never thought I’d be getting a purple one!
