brasilensis
itaguahensis
aggregata
uvalha (sweet)

Maybe the topic should be which eugenias are worse than surinam? Almost all the eugenias i know are better than surinam.

whats worse than a surinam Oscar?

an red surinam as opposed to a black colored?

not many eugenias are currently being grown by nurseries, that I can think of, that are much worse.

I find pitanga very similar in taste to uniflora - but it should have some potential for selection as it fruits early with big fruits. Some of the other common species like stipitata and victoriana are a bit too acidic. E. natalitia is small and too resinous in taste; uniflora is better for sure.

Maybe I'm one of the few, but I really like Surinam cherries, especially the black ones. I guess I'm less sensitive to the resinous taste than most people.

Kind of like how some people do and some don't notice the sort of starchy / powdery  aspect to Val Carrie mangos.

So, simple question:  which other Eugenia is the best, the one I must get?   ::)

Surinam cherry has to be darkish red ripe or past ripe. The unripe ones are sour, not resinous...that's my perception. I like them ripe and sweet and ripe=sweet. If I had room I would get an SC and let it grow bush/tree size. They are better this way than hedges where they usually don't get sun-ripened

E. candolleana. I think there are not many E. species without a sour edge.

Eugenia paniculatum is a lot worse than surinam cherry. But it's mostly just grown as a fast growing hedge. Was very popular landscape plant in San Diego. I think also E. victoriana and E. stipitata are a lot worse than surinam, out of hand anyway, as they are extremely sour.
Yes many people find the black colored surinams better tasting than the reds.

I prefer stipitata out of hand to uniflora out of hand. Im a bit odd though as I've been known to munch on Garcinia xanthowhatever fresh. The big redeeming feature for stipitata over many others is the sorbet it makes  ;D

Hi to all :),
I recently found a Black Surinam cherry tree in Funchal! The taste was fantastic, very sweet better than the normal Red Surinam cherries!
I Planted over 25 Black surinam seeds and they are starting to germinate! I'm going to try to grow atleast 5 tree! Each will be planted in a 25gal pot and the rest I will give them away!

I have a SC that tastes like a very sweet bell pepper.  I don't like bell peppers, so....but my wife enjoys them.

Wow Steven what a great find!  A friend has a seedling tree that has light red berries that are excellent, very clean and refreshing tasting.  He also has a # selection with black fruit that to me is not as good.  I tried some frozen E. victoriana that I thought had a nice but sour taste
