Winter Plans/First Arctic Blast
« on: November 29, 2013, 09:25:48 AM »
How are you plants fairing during this first cold snap? What have you guys done to protect your seedlings and field grown. Here are a couple of pictures of my temporary green house. The permanent one will go up next year.

The 12z GFS is showing high temperatures as much as 45F below average for north Dakota as we head into next weekend. This translates to highs near or below -10F. Absolutely frigid air is on the way. http://i.imgur.com/k8tuaKJ.png

I have a lesson for everyone from the stupid.
IF you decide to grow numerous types of vining plants, and IF you decide to grow them in very close proximity to each other and IF some of the plants are tropical and some are not, and IF they are in pots and IF freezing weather is coming your way and IF you don't want the tropical vines to die.....

You get to untangle a gordian knot.  KNOT fun and KNOT recommended.

Can't tell you how many hours I spent un-knotting.  I did get it done before the blast tho.

Do like Alexander did and cut where needed. It may make storage simpler too.

So how come you did not use your product "blanket..something" when you know damage occurs at higher temps than 31F ?

@SNOWBIRDBOB take a look at QPF + 2-meter temp -- well below freezing.  Also, pick some representative meteograms. pic.twitter.com/7Izo1ytve4

Well, I'm in zone 7 (Raleigh NC) and we usually don't get really cold until Thanksgiving and then we warm back up for a few weeks of Indian Summer - but not this year. Some nights in the teens already!! daytime highs up to 40 degrees! Looks like its gonna be a long cold winter.

When I say I have a greenhouse, what I really mean to say is that I bought one of those hoophouse kits and built it on top of an old basketball court in the yard. Asphalt does a good job of soaking up sunshine and radiating heat over night but when the structure is 20 by 30 with a 15 foot tall ridge - asphalt can only do so much. A hoophouse does not seal up tight like a greenhouse so I have modified mine somewhat by stapling the plastic sheeting to lumber I screwed to the metal posts and mounding up wood chips along the base to stop air leaks under the edge. For heat I use an old wood burning stove with a blower unit attached. I can easily get a 20-25 degree gain from outside temps BUT, I have to tend to the fire every hour or so ALL NIGHT LONG. This gets about as old as de-tangling vines (and yes, I grow passionvines in pots so I know all about the tangle). I use a kerosene heater as backup which does a good job on a freezing night but it takes both heat sources on nights below 25.

It sounds like a hassle, but actually sitting by a roaring fire surrounded by tropical trees ain't so bad. Wi-fi will reach out there so I can play on my laptop in the evenings and it still beats hauling everything in and out of the basement.

Stay warm everybody!

don't worry Ed...believe it or not...the leaves falling is a good thing...it's when they don't fall that you should be alarmed...this means the tree died from the cold.

my trees only saw temps of about 40F, and now the leaves are turning brown...like they got hot coffee poured on them.

I'm confident our trees will survive, but don't let them get below 35F too many times...it will eventually kill the tree in most cases.

We had a little over 2 hours in the morning where the temps were below 50F.  The low was 48F.  So far no damage seen on guanabanas in ground or any of the following seedlings in pots:  marang, pulasan, rambutan, durian, and a whole bevy of garcinia types.  It usually takes at least two weeks to see some of the possible cold damage at this level of cold.  Stay tuned. Sorry for those that did have damage.  Hope recovery is speedy.

I almost feel like it's easier being in new york when i read this, i just bring in everything and boom, dome. It snowed a bit and the temps routinely go to almost freezing now but i have none of this hassle cause all my plants are nice and sound in the living room.

And i love the winter here  ;D  no airconditioning needed, only a fan but in daytime in the sun it is still too hot to be in the garden. All plants in flower now, mango's almost pingpong=size ....ok that's engough to make you jealous i guess.  ;)

I was out of town when the cold snap hit , I believe that Adam is correct , the trees only suffered leave damage on some of the leaves , but my Guanabana trees are really health 10 ft + with very thick trunks .

Next snap I will cover them up with the Planket .
Thanks All..
