Veneer grafting to make low branches
« on: December 26, 2013, 01:55:04 PM »
Hey there, so my Keitt mango is cleft grafted kinda high. About 2-2 1/2 feet. I was wondering if I could do a veneer graft  about a foot up to give it some lower branches. Any other grafting techniques that may work better?

Probably won't do much good. Grafts don't usually really take off until after you behead the rootstock. To really get growth like you want you would probably have to graft it low and remove the growth above the new graft. Probably not worth sacrificing all of that top growth.

Agreed.  A low graft will likely remain dormant or grow very little as all the energy will be sent to to the top of the tree and all of the terminal buds that come from the uppermost parts of the tree.
