Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Puerto Rico forum member death
« on: December 12, 2021, 06:01:55 PM »
So sad to hear of this tragedy. I did a few trades with Ertdude, and they were mostly positive, with Tre just being a bit slow to respond. He was doing good work at restoring Machabca, at least preserving it and trying to clean it up. I hope someone can continue Tre’s work there.

Rest In Peace, and prayers for him and his family.

Replied! To anyone else still interested, I only have cacao plants with mixed IDs left, mainly CATIE R-varieties and Peruvian ones. I’m in Poland now, but possibly might be able to get my mom to send some plants for me. Could not guarantee it though. Still have some Umbratica left as well.

3
Received my Cacao and Herrania in fabulous order-

Thanks TomekK! Enjoy School

Glad to hear it! Thank you!

4
Sent all orders today! Let me know if I didn’t send you a message with the tracking number.

5
Final week to get your order in! I’m leaving for Poland on Monday, will send all orders on Friday or Saturday!

Bulk discounts on remaining plants (lots of Peruvian and CATIE varieties left!): $9 a plant for 20 plants, $8 a plant for 40 plants, $7 a plant for $80 plants!

6
Shipped a couple orders over the weekend/Monday, the rest will probably be sent on September 3-4, to give the herranias as much time to mature.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Theobroma obovatum
« on: August 23, 2021, 09:00:33 PM »
Hi,

This is old but did you find more information about this one? I’m interested about Theobromas :)

Thanks

I haven’t found much more info about Obovatum so far. In the Amazon River Fruits book there is a page on Obovatum-describes it as a wild fruit collected and eaten in the rainforest, not sold at markets. Should grow in wetter areas, as the book focuses on the lower, wetter Amazon south of Brasil.

Sent messages/emails to everyone who preordered the plants to confirm orders. Let me know in this thread if you didn’t get my message/email!

Wrote you here through the forum message system again. I think I made a mistake with your email address, since I couldn't find my written email either.

Sven
Okay, got it now!

Send you an e-mail. Regards,
Sven
Hello, sorry, didn’t get your email. Did you send it through the forum email system, or directly to my email, Tomasz.kleczek@icloud.com?

Thanks,
Tomek

Nice, did you eat them yet? How did they taste?

Can’t say I agree with that-hopefully the situation improves in the next year or two, in time for me to try to go back to PR. But I honestly don’t see it getting any better, especially now that they’re trying to put restrictions back on.

Anyway, you certainly had an incredible trip and got to eat wonderful fruit! Really well-written post and some great photos, thanks again!

Thanks for the post! Glad you got to go this year. Sad you couldn’t visit Montoso Gardens or the USDA station. I guess that’s why the USDA station is ignoring my emails this past year…

Regarding the vaccinations in your group, were they mandatory because the farms you visited required them, or something else?

Nice plants! I’d try to get the one that’s left if I didn’t have plants of my own. They’re just sprouting-how fast did your plants grow? Mine are currently very slowly developing their first true leaves.

Looking good! You sure got a lot of seedlings!

Thank you! Far too many for my 4x5 grow tent…

Nice to hear you’re feeling better, and wow, what a nice group of ilamas! Hope you have gotten some seeds from them. Interesting to hear how the southeast Asian fruits are becoming more common south of Mexico. Are you finding any durians?

Wow, that’s a really nice variety of fruits you got to try! Glad you were able to go this year, I loved reading your earlier PR trip blog posts and look forward to this one. Nice durians and pulasan.

All cacaos doing really well, will be ready to ship in a week or two. Herranias still small, Albiflora and Umbratica are beginning to mature their first leaves.

Lots of the Peruvian varieties and CATIE varieties left, some Pentagona, Porcelana, Catongo, and Nacional also still available. Lots of Herrania Umbratica left. One last T. Bicolor remaining.

I am currently fostering two cacao seedlings of unknown variety (gift of Eric Durtschi to my CRFG chapter), but given that I am in Southern California, the lack of humidity really beats these guys up if I take them out of my makeshift greenhouse. I would be delighted to buy some of your seedlings but do you have any recs for growing them up in the land of Santa Anas?

Hi, growing in California is tough for cacao because of the humidity, but if you can keep humidity high in a greenhouse they should do well. Temperatures can’t get below 45 degrees preferably, though they might take a dip into lower 40s once in a while (but don’t quote me on that-the fact that mine survived low 40s once or twice before I took them back indoors doesn’t mean yours will).

Your cacaos look nice, the new leaves on the one one the right really look good. If your greenhouse can keep high humidity (I’d say over 70-80 percent, but I know many people successfully grow cacaos with 50-60 percent indoors. My indoor humidity during the winter is around 30 percent, so not good).

I think we have a similar situation regarding humidity, especially during the winter. But if you want to keep them outdoors, you’ll have to protect them from the cold. I keep mine indoors during the winter in a grow tent. Now I’m building a better one (with an intake fan!) to add some air circulation, as the previous one really doesn’t have any.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Silvestre Silva’s books?
« on: August 06, 2021, 07:32:51 PM »
So I’m thinking about getting a book by Silvestre Silva. I understand that the Fruits Brasil and variants are mainly picture books with not much info about each species, but that is fine for me.

My question is, to those that have any of these books, do they have any theobromas and herranias in them? Also, which edition do you have and what do you think about it? The newest edition is some 150 pages longer than an early edition, but it costs 3 times as much. Wondering whether the new edition is worth getting over the older ones.

Im still picking here, will spend some more time picking today and setting everything up.  We had a lot of stuff ripe this time.

What’s the big yellow melon? Also how did you manage to grow everything without deer/disease/soil/weather/people/chipmunks/squirrels/etc. destroying everything?! Nice fruit haul is an understatement.
