Golden or Yellow Dragon Fruit?
« on: January 15, 2018, 07:43:04 PM »
I was at a local international food store a week or so ago and saw these yellow dragon fruit.
Interestingly I had just been looking and just purchased seeds of the "GIANT YELLOW MEGALANTHUS SEEDS FROM PERU XL" -Thanks Dragonfruit101.

Well I had to try one and I liked it.
I picked up a couple more today and thought I should share photos to see if these could be properly identified.
The reciept refered to them as Golden Gragon Fruit.
The label says Ecuador Divine, I don't know if they are from Ecuador or that's just the variety.

Note they are not irradiated so I guess seeds are viable.

Anyone wants some seed I am sure there will be more than enough to share.

I might even eat a couple more just for you  :)

Back to my question, what is this and will it go well in Florida,  The fruit is about 5 inches long and a tad over 3 inches across and weighs 14 ozs.  It looks like it had thorns that have been removed.  Says Ecuador Divine

PS, these two were on the larger size, there were many smaller ones and few this size or larger.

YES!!! Please eat more! So it will be profitable to import this fruit.
😁
I am not interested in seeds...  I am waiting for cuttings.

Yes, the Ecuador Divine brand name is on Facebook for a few years.
They have been shipping some other fruit including mango, sapodilla and mamey.
https://www.facebook.com/AmazonDragonfruit/

Their website is down, but the page said they were out of Palora, Ecuador, the heart of yellow DF production.

I just picked up an identical specimen from "La Salsa" market in Jacksonville FL, having heard good things about yellows. I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed, as it just tasted like a sweeter dragon fruit, which I'd summarize as a grass flavored melon with chia seeds.

Did I get a bad one, or is this all I can expect from even the best dragon fruits?

So I ate the last two of this fruit and saved seeds.  It tasted better than any other dragon fruit I have had.  Considering I have not had any premium dragon fruit, this might mean precious little.

I germinated a few and have a whole lot more left.
Anyone interested in some I will be glad to share.

I understand it might take a very long time to get fruit from seed and folks would rather have cuttings.  Well I have no cuttings yet and will not for many moons.  So seed it is this go around.

By the way, this is not a business I just have seeds from a fruit I liked and that I would be happy to share.  I may make you pay for shipping.
If you know there are restrictions to shipping seeds to your location please

I found this same exact yellow dragon fruit from Ecuador at M&D Asian Market in St Pete today

Taste: imagine a white dragon fruit drizzled with honey but with noticeably crunchy seeds.  Very sweet. Very enjoyable. $8.99 per pound. Fruits ranged from .75 to 1.0 lbs

Picked up one last week at the whole foods in Altamonte Springs.

Was very, very good.  Certainly the best DF I've ever tasted.  I harvested about 30 seeds, washed and dried them off and planted them earlier today in a cactus mix.  I started a bunch of red DF seeds about 2 months ago and many of those have sprouted - but they're so, so tiny.  Hope these yellow ones sprout out as they're much tastier than the reds I've had.

So I purchased a few more of these today and I bought the ones with the pieces of the DF stem on them still.

Is there anything special I should do to them to make sure they take?
- Rooting hormone?
- Making a newer cut at the base to encourage root growth?
- Should I use a "humidifier" - ie, since I'm using red solo cups do I put a plastic bag over the cups?

thanks

I asked a friend who successfully rooted a piece of giant yellow Megalanthus your question.

He said;
Many people just root them like normal cuttings.
This time of year is not the ideal time for cuttings.
I rooted my megalanthus in the winter time and I had to bring it inside into a sunny window amd place a heating mat underneath.

I planted several of the seeds from this fruit and it appears every last one germinated.  I planted fresh by placing on a tissue, wetting and setting on a bed of potting soil.  Now I have many tiny plants I need to give away.

I still have seeds for anyone who wants some.
It will cost you shipping and nothing else.

I would very much appreciate seeds or seedlings.  I only have American Beauty right now and love it.

Thanks again for the seeds.  I really do appreciate it, I thought you'd like to see a photo of how the post office treated your envelope.  What a shame!

I PM'd you on this also.

None of the 3 stems that i had rooted as they all started to rot.

The seeds have sprouted fantastically and are outgrowing the red df seeds that I started a month earlier.
