Anyone grow black goji berry?
« on: March 10, 2017, 10:41:11 PM »
This species like similar species seems to have many healing properties. Do you all think it has some commercial potential, or selling potential for the plants?

Yes I grow them. Still wait for fruiting... They are interesting. When you put the dry berry to the water, it stay blue at first then violet. Fruits are rich in antioxidants.

Yeah! They'd make a beautiful tea. I would expect it to prefer a climate similar to that of the regular goji. Don't know if they are used fresh or in cereals like red goji.

Just got these seeds from Germany via eBay.  As a general rule, don't order seeds from china.

That's good to hear! Yeah, ordering seeds from China is a terrible idea. Its ironic, because I'm pretty sure goji originated in China. :o

I ordered some from http://www.plant-world-seeds.com/store/view_seed_item/5539?itemname=GOJI+BERRY+BLACK+PEARLS

I had nearly full germination in January but they seem much more delicate plants then normal goji. Out of 20 seedling only 7 survived to be potted up to 1 gallon pots.

Here's a taste test:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pYM6Q-LhFs

This guy grew 'em for two years before he got a taste. The result: disappointing. Apparently a medicinal and metallic taste. Personally, I'd still grow them, but I'm glad to know I shouldn't dedicate space to too many of these plants. A couple suffice.

Incidentally, I've heard of a lot of people hating the taste of Red Goji Berries (despite also hearing about good taste reviews). Apparently it's a species thing: L. barbarum is the fruit, with good taste, and L. chinense is a leaf vegetable with bad-tasting fruit. This other guy grows L. barbarum 'Crimson Star' and L. chinense 'Sweet Lifeberry', and he also does a taste test:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7VRKZYzPfM

Apparently, L. chinense tastes like a weird pepper, while L. barbarum is sweeter, juicier, with a raisin-like berry flavor.

Yes, it seems that black goji is strictly good for medicinal purposes. I have red goji plants that flowered last year but produced not fruits. It hasn't flowered for 2017 yet. Maybe this year?:)

Fairdinkumseeds in Australia has these seeds with great germination rates. However I've tried growing them twice but have yet to keep them alive to fruiting...
Trying to grow it all!

I got some seeds from Baker creek this year (Yes, I know this is an old post) and already have a mature, heavily fruiting red. I didn't particularly enjoy the taste of the red but it's not bad. Kind of like a tart tomato to me?
Anyone else have experience with the black? Taste and growth wise?

Last summer I got some fruits finaly, not much but sufficient for taste. I didnt find any metal aftertaste but fruits wasnt so sweet as I check in red,,sweet lifeberry. So if the purpose is to have some antioxidants, I can recomend it, but you can not expect sweet raisins.
