I'm curious if anyone has actually done it.  As it's often said, "don't over water, or you'll get root rot!"  or  "Watering every day is way too much, it should be once per week, or per month"

And now I'm thinking I've been so afraid to over water, that I've been under watering for years.    During this last heat wave, I started watering every day, and now all my tree are popping with growth.

With that said, I think it would interesting to hear first-hand experience in tree murder by over watering.  Or possibly the opposite, Tree abundance by overwatering!

« on: September 03, 2017, 01:39:47 PM »
Lets get a list of the best Youtube channels for rare fruit.   As the quality of Youtube has increased like 10x in the last few years, and now there a huge change going on in society because the quality of content is often better and more accurate than TV.

My top so far is

Vegan Athlete - All kinds of great stuff on growing tropical in Desert Climates,  I wish I found this 3 years ago, It would have saved me many of mistakes.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Rooting a whole fig Tree?
« on: July 18, 2016, 01:25:27 AM »
I had gopher take out a 3" trunk fig tree.   Since the roots are gone, I figured I would put it in a bucket of water and see what happens.  Has anyone tried this before, or have any tips for rooting a whole tree?  ...I know you can root small branches by putting them in water and changing the water daily.

So I've been changing my irrigation up, and just switched from bubbler heads to shrub heads, Which are great because you can dial you radius anywhere from 1ft to 8ft.   I also changed my watering time from 13 minutes to 35 minutes to make up for the slower flow rate.  I water right now, once every 4 days.

So far my 35 minutes is about 25 gallons.  The trees are roughly 6 to 8 ft high, 3 to 5ft canopy.  Mostly Avacodo and Mango on these valves.

I read one avocado farmer who said a full grown avacodo tree needs 450 gallons per week.  This seems crazy to me as right now I'm putting about 50 gallons per week, but again my trees are not fully grown...

How much water are you guy putting on your trees?   I'm especially interested in people in So cal.

Here's a pic of new banana circle I just built.  It's 10ft wide, with roughly a 6 by 2 deep hole in the center full of wood.  Next step I just need to plant the bananas and hook up irrigation.

With that said, what are the best varieties for So cal?    So far I have Ice Cream Raja Puri, and I think Oro Blanco.  The circle is suppose to have 7, so I need 4 more.

Also what is the best place online to order them?

thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Filtering Chlorine from your irrigation system?
« on: February 22, 2015, 01:41:12 AM »
I was thinking about making a large charcoal filter and hooking it up to all the water that comes onto my property.  Doing research for a design I came across this company that a has a simple design that eliminates packing.   They claim their carbon is supior because it has more surface area.  Probably bullshit, But I'm not a carbon expert.

Here's the vid of their design, you can see the diagram at 1.48.

Anyways it seems easy enough to build an even larger one of these using ABS pipe and Biochar, and running all your water through it.

Anyone tried it?

"The researchers found that higher pitched calls were produced when the chimps encountered fruits from Nauclea trees. Smaller trees elicited still higher pitched calls, while calls associated with bigger trees with more fruit were lower in pitch."

Anyone tried Nauclea fruits?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Great Report on micro sprinkler irrigation
« on: January 06, 2015, 12:06:31 AM »
Just stumbled upon this, I wish I found it early when I was setting up my irrigation system.   There's not much out there on micro sprinklers. and this report is very thorough. When I was reading I thought to myself, this guy must be expensive to hire, but it's actually college report.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Multi species plant fusion
« on: January 04, 2015, 01:03:59 AM »
Anyone tried this?

Growing 2 different species together to see if they exchange any properties?   Mostly to see if a cold tolerant species would share that trait with a tropical

"A natural graft between a birch (left) and an oak (right). Sexually incompatible species can exchange chloroplast genomes at graft sites."

http://www.mpg.de/5010542/genetic_information_plants

However I'm still a bit confused by what they mean.... even if the trees fuse together, they may be talking about creating a new plant from a tissue sample taking from the fusion spot....  Maybe someone who is more science literate than me will be able to figure it out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best 1/2 head for irrigation?
« on: November 18, 2014, 11:50:25 PM »
I'm wondering what people are using for irrigation?   I know some use drip,  however I'm all set up with half inch threaded PVC heads on each of my trees.  So far I've used bubblers, but they don't work very well because the water drains straight down and does not saturate the root zone.

I've have about 50 trees, and am trying to find a solution where I can just replace all the heads.  So far I've tried stream bubblers, they only saturate a circle around the head.

I noticed when I was at Quail gardens the other day, they used MP rotator sprinklers.  I've used them to water my lawn and they work great, I'm thinking of trying the small radius version on my fruit trees, but it's a pretty big investment at $6 each, X 50 trees.  And I would probably still have to move the head location around, which is a bitch with all trenching required.  Needless to say, I want to get it right.

Anyone else find a good solution besides drip lines?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Green Sapote's in California
« on: November 13, 2014, 09:14:46 PM »
I'm curious if anyone has fruited a Green Sapote in CA?   I know Papaya Tree Nursery has a dwarf variety in the ground, but he said it only has one fruit per year or so.

I saw a few people have them growing well in pots, has anyone fruited one?

....So far mine has put on a lot of growth, and flowered, but I've only had it one season.    Another "Red Fasion" seedling I bought on ebay, has just withered since I got it, but it's still alive!   Also curious if anyone has done any work on these?
