Did you get the black madeira from this year's exchange? I thought I saw it at the OC event but when I went back to the table I saw a lot of black mission but that was it. Didn't see it at the other meetings.

Im hoping to go down to the foothill meeting as well but will probably only have some apple and stone fruit as my avos are pretty small and I've given away most of those cuttings at the previous meetings.

I met someone at the OC meeting who says she grafts mangoes now and near perfect take. She said she grafts just before they push new growth and panicles with excellent results -- seems to go against everything I've read about on this forum. I may try it.

I've been to 3 of the scion wood exchanges this year and made out like a bandit  ;D

I got my hands on the following:

Apricot   Cultivar
   Luizet
   Goldbeck's Perfection
   Tropical Gold
   Tardif de Bordaniel
   Golden Amber
   Gold Kist
   Shiro Kaga

Peach
JB 47 White Peach (locally named cultivar after Jim Bathgate)

Nectarine
   Sauzee
   Flavor Top
   Panamint
Plum
   Green Gage

Pluot
   Flavor Treat

Cherry
   Lapins

Avocado
   Queen
   Nabal
   Daily 11
   Yamagata
   Edranol
   Nimlioh
   Ardith
   Linda
   Choquette
   Nowels

Cherimoya
        Booth

Mulberry
         White lavender fat
          Persian

Fig
         Conadria
         Fig 9336

The San Diego meeting is next. Anyone grab anything interesting? I hadn't heard of Flavor Treat or Flavor Top, but apparently they are mainly commercial varieties and not really widely released to the public. Daily 11 is a very large avocado but I heard taste is average. I hear a lot about choquette avocados from Florida and was told it is a typical West Indian variety (not my favorite profile) but willing to try it out. I don't know anything about Linda avocado.

Not sure how to respond to those photos Adam other than to wish you best of luck. Some of the photos are eerily pretty even though a part of me cringes when I think about it. Are you still shipping/selling jabos? If you’re not too preoccupied with damage control, I’d be interested in a few varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: La Verne Mangoes this Year
« on: January 19, 2018, 01:21:50 AM »
I have keitt on turpentine from Florida and another from Laverne. The Florida one is a year older but is growing wildly. The largest of my admittedly small trees. I have some brokaw mangoes which are also growing quickly but not sure what rootstock those are on. Brokaw is in Ventura county so I figured their rootstock would be suitable for SoCal.

Well. we tried it today. It's definitely Bacon or bacon-ish (if truly a seedling). Sadly not one of varieties that we (large family of 9) enjoy, so that's a resounding no on whether or not to graft it.

Looking forward to the crfg scion exchanges coming up this weekend. San Diego and OC.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Panicle
« on: January 15, 2018, 09:20:24 PM »
I’m sure someone with more experience  can/will correct me but my understanding is that the type of growth is dictated by average temperatures and rainfall. If the tree is actively growing and average temps are below 65 then you will get panicles. If the average temps are higher then you will get vegetative growth. We have tricky weather here in SoCal because our daytime temps can be high while the lows at night can drag the averages under the bar. Most of my mangoes had vegetative growt starting in may/June. All growth before then last year were panicles.

As for rainfall, I think mangoes also like the flower after the dry season.

I realize the seedling could be anything but trying to figure out rough heritage. 😀 Didn't know bacon could get large.

Seemed to me it was much heftier, longer, and wider in the belly than fuerte and overall bigger than bacon. Maybe the pictures for size comparison aren't that great but I tried to show that it is nearly as long as a banana and more than twice as big as a store-bought haas avocado (the little black one on the side). Seemed much bigger than a large haas or lamb. About as wide around as a large reed but taller than a Pinkerton.

At a recent crfg meeting, I received budwood from an avocado seedling tree that reportedly makes excellent large avocados in Riverside. I have quite a few (albeit junior) trees and wasn't looking to experiment but figured what the heck. As a bonus, the person who brought the wood also gave me an avocado from said tree. Attached is a picture. I'll update the post when it ripens and I try it but does anyone have an idea of what variety it is or may have come from? The donor told me it came from a seedling tree on an avocado farm. He didn't know too much else about it but there are fuerte trees on that farm (this is obviously not a fuerte avocado).

Any help is appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My first taste of Dr. White cherimoya
« on: January 08, 2018, 12:12:06 AM »
I just received budwood for a booth cherimoya. I have pierce el bumpo and Santa Rosa but no rootstock so looking to add it on (probably to el bumpo as that is the biggest one I have).
2 questions though:
1) anything I should know about cherimoya grafting? Is this the wrong season? Do temps need to be higher?

2) also, My trees are essentially defoliated from some terrible Santa Ana winds last month and they haven't sprouted leaves or pushed new growth yet. If I graft now, will growth push to the graft as well or is it better to wait for the trees to recover and then graft.

Thanks

FWIW: My kesar is small and prefers to flower instead of put on vegetative growth.

That's something to look forward to. I cut mine back last summer (10 gallon pot) and it took forever and a day to sprout some new growth. But it's in full sun and hasn't batted an eye at high heat, night time lows, or Santa Ana winds.

I have a handful with flowers. Kesar, juicy peach come to mind. Should I keep them on during winter or pinch them off? Do mangoes need a resting or dormant season? This would be my first winter really paying attention to them.

I've seen the greenhouse in the back. It is full however labeling is terrible. I would consider it just about impossible to know which variety is which. Many pots or sleeves not labeled, some labeled with wrong tree type (i.e. Roses).

Re: gel2root, I tried it with a few plants including pomegranate. Suffice to say that the cuttings were alive and had some growth but never developed actual roots. Pomegranate is so easy to root otherwise but I couldn't believe I didn't get anything in the gel2root medium for 2 months.

I finally removed the pieces and grew them successfully outdoors in a pot. All the gel2root seemed to do was keep it alive. Didn't notice any roots or anything. When I looked at reviews afterward she, it seemed to have lots of negative ones where people had a similar experience.

Good luck

At a previous oc crfg meeting on figs earlier this year, the speaker mentIroned that certain fig varieties are best suited for specific locations. He mentioned black Madeira as being outstanding for inland areas. He felt that they didn't develop appropriate taste close to the coast. He recommended prieto (sp?) fig for coastal climates.

There are a lot of online resources on figs . It sounds like you can get outstanding tasting figs if grown in the right environment.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Guava season in Socal

How does it grow for you? My first one died within a week of obtaining it from Florida but that may have been shock related. I have been growing a second one in a little greenhouse and it's doing just fine.

Can it grow well in full socal sun?

Nice!
Looks like more than one variety in photo.

My variegated guava (honeymoon) is holding few fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growth habit of Phoenix mango tree.
« on: October 02, 2017, 02:06:21 AM »
Here are 2 pictures of my phoenix trees.

I received it from toptropicals at the end of April. When I received with tree, it essentially defoliated but had a nice thick-caliper trunk. The first flush under my care showed these uniquely-shaped long slender twisted leaves. Subsequent flushes have looked like more standard mango flushes.

Tree is growing here in Orange CA but my cotton candy which is next to it and came under similar circumstances (but from plantogram) has grown more vigorously and is more than a foot taller and wider on both sides.

I attached a second picture to show how the phoenix is doing compared to some other mangoes. From left to right: back row, (far left, almost out of picture) Madame Francis, Kathy, Juicy Peach, Sweet Tart; front row, Peach Cobbler, Phoenix, Cotton Candy).

The white powdery stuff on the leaves is WP Surround. I got a hint from Carlos's website. I sprayed it hoping to prevent burning of my trees when it reached 100 in August. Nothing burned except for my Sharwil avocado but I think it may have cooled the mangoes too much in September as they seemed to just pause during the first 3 weeks of 70-80 degree weather in September. They are picking up again after this past week of heat but this may be the last flush of the season for them.

As an aside, I also have Ambrosia and Kathy and both have been slow growers for me. Ambrosia put out 1 flush. Kathy put out 2-3 but only grows about 4 inches in between spurts. Kesar also very slow growing, with most of the growth causing the tree to branch out.

Mine in ground for 8 months with two flushes but very small flushes, appears to be slow grower in CA.

Can someone please post pictures of new fresh growth leaves and matured leaves? wanted to compare if I got real one, lately Florida nurseries are sending us mislabeled stuff.

Here is that picture of the 15gal La Verne Manila mango I found for sale.

I called la Verne and asked them directly. They said they use the same rootstock for all their mangoesband just graft on other varieties (like keitt). For Manila, they just let thebrootstock grow.

I did try and graft on earlier this season. Didn't takenbutbthat was probably me.

I recently found a 15 gallon la Verne Manila monster at h&h nursery in Lakewood. Couldn't believe the size of this juggernaut. Will post a picture if I can figure that out later.

Mark, what is your keyplex spraying regimen? I sprayed a few months back. I thought I followed the directions and diluted appropriately but a part of me still felt I was using too much. I sprayed anyways. Got a lot of damage to my plants. Lots of dark black spots, esp on fruits (citrus especially). Looked like small cigarette burns.

Mark what makes you think the flying dragon root stock induce chlorosis? I don't understand why it prolongs dormancy and does this really matter for container grown trees that are kept warm year round?

Based on experience and also parroted in expert's guide after thorough testing of rootstocks.  Can't find the link but FD is known for being the most prone to chlorosis of them all.   Google is your friend.

Here's a Meyer lemon branch on FD with the new foliage OK after spraying and drenching with Keyplex 350DP, the only micro supplement I've found that works:

Note that the older foliage is chlorotic?
