Help, black beetles are eating our atemoya grove. We have about 1/2 acre of atemoya. What's the best organic way to deal with these beetles? I am thinking to tell my folks to use Tengard SRF on them.

What you ever seen this before?  What kind of beetles is this?

Thanks,

M

Hello everyone,

Can you fruit soursop, star apple, ilama, and santol in container? I just saw a YouTube's video of this one player growing these fruit trees in container. I am curious if these can fruit. His trees are pretty big and tall. He's from Orange County, CA.
On another video, he said that sapodilla require hand pollination. Is that true? Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Kind Of Custard Apples Is This?
« on: December 26, 2017, 12:45:03 PM »
I bought this custard apple from Carrefour over here. The label says it's a Lebanon custard apple. This thing is big, bigger than a normal sugar apple. It's as big as an atemoya. Flavor and seeds are like similar to na da sugar apple. I am collecting its seeds. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fastest Growing Sapodillas?
« on: December 20, 2017, 06:54:27 AM »
Hello everyone,

I heard sapodillas are slow growers. What cultivars grow the fastest and/or good tasting? I need to plant a row of them in the backyard to block the afternoon's sun from hitting the house. I currently have some Alano chicos. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is It Too Late To Germinate Illama Seeds?
« on: October 16, 2017, 01:33:51 AM »
So, I bought some illama seeds from Raul Ruiz. I am wondering if it is too late to germinate seeds? I bought GA-3 acid to help with germination too. I am having my dad to germinate these seeds. If it's too late to germinate, can I store them over the winter? I am from Southern California.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please, help me identify this mango
« on: September 13, 2017, 10:35:40 PM »
I just had this mango and it tasted really good. It tasted like Nam Doc Mai or Dumaguete mango from the Philippines not like the one we buy at Costco or the supermarket back home.

I am going to smuggle some seeds back. Thanks!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Questions About The New Zealand Rose Apple
« on: September 13, 2017, 04:43:59 AM »
I am in Doha, Qatar, at the moment. Looks like the Arabs like the New Zealand Rose apple. I was skeptical at first, but this apple is good. Very crisp, juicy, and sweet. Much better than the American varieties. Is it possible to collect the seeds? Will it germinate? I am collecting a bunch of seeds here. My favorite desert fruit is the watermelon from the Arabian Peninsula. It's super juicy and sweet. The Arabs call it "hav-hav."

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Tropical Fruit Tree Orchard
« on: August 17, 2017, 04:42:13 PM »
I just moved to Southern California. So I didn't have much time to plant anything due to my constant travel between here and Georgia. However, I did manage to plant some onions, malanga and taro, tomatoes, ginger, galangal, tumeric, and herbs of all kinds.

Then, there's my fruit tree orchard. So far, I have guava, apples, Korean pear, citrus of all kind, dragon fruit, longan, persimmon, jackfruit, atemoya, red custard apple, sapote, sapodilla, jambu apple, jaboticaba, banana, avocado, etc. I am not even done with my orchard. I still have a lot of land for sugarcane and banana grove and other tropical vegetables and fruits. I have 0.35 acre. If I need more land,  I can plant more on my folks' property.  They have about 3 acres.

Once I return from Qatar, I will continue to plant the rest of trees or land. Here's a picture of my lower 1/3 of my property. So far, I have two rows of tropical fruit trees on drip irrigation. Throwing some chickens and ducks in the back there, I will be self-sustaining.

Folks,

I am thinking to plant couple of Malay apple trees for shade and fruit in my back yard. I have a question. Can they survive the winter in the Riverside-Temecula area? My brother said I should be fine. He said he's not seen frost in years. Thanks!
