Mangosteens have landed
« on: November 02, 2012, 02:17:44 AM »

These mangosteens acquired today are just the common Malaysian types with medium sized leaves and fruit. The are not a type known to have any tolerance of cool weather or strong sun.

This mangosteen variety has few developed seeds with segments of similar size, fairly thick skin and very sweet flesh.

If this was a better forum, it would have a scratch and taste function!

I'm a bit confused with your use of "this" and "these."  Are the 3 opened fruits from the 6 pictured fruits that are unopened?  It is hard to get perspective. The opened ones in your hand look somewhat larger than the unopened ones on the ground. Good to see in any case, ordinary or not. Also nice to see no gamboge.....just beautiful white flesh. Is gamboge an issue there in some years?

Haus yes it was badly expressed and they are the same. The second picture is just 3 of them cut open.Gamboge can be a problem in local mangosteen and it varies between trees and seasons.I had about a dozen fruit today and all were perfect inside but I could get no worthwhile seeds.

BEAUTIFUL fruits Mike, lucky fellow, no gamboge or translucent flesh and no seeds is not necessarily a bad thing.

Good day. Where did you get them from and how much was the total cost?

Thank you.
Behave in the image that GOD created us in. Cultivate the earth with good seed so our children and other behind us can reap good fruits.

ricocecargill while I  have a good bearing tree as do some friends and I know 4 farmers who grow them commercially I got these from the local market.I know the local vendor and he was asking for an outrageous $3.80/lb for the first of the spring season I did not pay that.It took a wink and a nod for me to get a more modest price and extra fruit thrown in.
Ethan yes I prefer more flesh and no seeds but I was going to send seeds away.It doesn't matter because they were not the good variety I was really looking for.I want the borneo small leafed type.

Cultivator, I presume you are south of the river, north of Mossman and are talking about the Port Douglas markets.2 bucks each is taking it too far and the vendor should be wearing a mask for that robbery.I up them at Rusty's when they pull the ol' $10/kg trick.
