Wonder if you have had any success propagating this bleeding heart acerola :)   I would really love to get my hands on one of them.  cuttings seeds whatever.   we make Acerola juice here all the time.   having one with superior color like this one would make those drinks look great.  and maybe have more juice?  I just bought a "lata" ( gallon can ) full of them to make juice.   lots of vitamin C for the kiddies .

Any update this year on this fruit?

I planted about 40 seeds and none germinated. I took many cuttings and tried rooting half with rooting hormone and half without. One rooted with the hormone, the rest perished. My one plant is only 6" tall and took a while to root.

Finally got a ripe fruit and took a pic.

its not as dark as Bobs
but, its darker (or red-er) than the ones i see on google img

i had one the other day which was darker (no camera) - no orange color at all.
it was riper too...
i never see very ripe ones as the squirrels get them before me.

It took seven years but I found another tree. The first one was destroyed by Hurricane Maria. This one produces darker fruits with darker flesh.

Staggered germination just over two months of red flesh acerola. A unique variation of acerola endemic to Vieques.

A pic of the plant and another showing the juice staining my hand. It isn't apparent from the pic but the plant has a bushier habit. I don't know if this is a result of growing in a very dry climate. I will have to visit the area after some heavy rains, whenever that may be, to see if the fruit gets any bigger.

There are some imperfections on the skin but this fruit was not spoiled
.

those leaves have some similarities with mexican species for sure...

Super cool, maybe try cuttings with rooting gel like cloneX? Hows the taste?

Regular acerola flesh reminds me of a mealy Red Delicious apple. These are sour but more like a cranberry and very juicy. They are excellent blended whole with the seeds to create a dark pink juice. During the dry season the fruits will dehydrate on the tree and you can pick them off and reconstitute in water.
