Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: To Cut or Not to Cut
« on: August 02, 2019, 06:25:26 PM »
My vote: Leave Be

Small tree with limited resources in trunk and limbs. I would not deplete those resources.

In about 3 years, you could always air layer any unwanted limbs if you wait.

Tree will eventually grow vertically more. Presently few limbs horizontally and plenty of sun hitting all horizontal limbs without shading them so tree has no huge urge to grow vertically currently.

I don't see any Kents on that mango tree. I hope you had some this year on another tree?

Thanks!
That's my Carrie in the background. My Kent had about 50 mangoes but were hit hard by anthracnose due to all the rain.

My young Lychee had die back on the main trunk and the horizontal limb on the right is growing faster than the
vertical section. Should I remove the horizontal limb on the right to allow the vertical one to grow faster or just
leave it as is?

TIA

I would also love some seed if anyone has this?

Does anyone have seeds to the Nangka Mini/Dwarf Jackfruit? I really is a remarkable plant and mine bloomed in 1 1/2 years from seed. I had a couple growing and fruiting but a landscape contractor destroyed them.

Thanks

Ray

Maryoto has sold them in the past. Don't know if they are available now.

It was a strange year for me in the St. Pete area. My Carrie bloomed like crazy and produced only 3 fruits. The Sweetheart Lychee did the same thing and produced no fruit. My Kent produced about 1/3 the normal amount and all the rain we have received has resulted in the majority of them with jelly seed. Weird year. I passed by one house with 12 - 15 Longan trees that were loaded last year. This year not one tree fruited.

Was he an old guy?  Or just became sick?

Long illness according to MRFC announcement.

Just found this on the Manatee Rare Fruit Council's web site. How sad:

"Long-term MRFC member Wayne Clifton passed away on June 19 after a long illness. Honoring his family’s request, the MRFC has sent a donation to the Tidewell Hospice branch in Ellenton in lieu of
flowers. In next month’s newsletter we plan to feature remembrances of Wayne and his many contributions to the MRFC and to fruit tree horticulture in our region. We ask those who wish
to contribute to send your written appreciation of Wayne to either Pete Robertson  or Darryl McCullough ."

I'm moving to Brandon Florida area soon. Does anyone know if it's good area to grow tropicals? Is it too far north? I want to grow mango, guava, coconut, and jack fruit in the area? If so any nurseries in the area that sell them?

Thank you.

Jene's Tropicals in St. Pete.

Abiu is a the very top of my favorite fruit list. Great plants and easy to grow. I'm happy to know you can grow them in St. Pete. I assume you have to protect it from cold snaps? My abiu trees have lots of fruit on them now ... AND they are flowing already again. I wonder if  they will respond that prolifically in the St. Pete climate. I'm going to take some abiu seeds to my daughter in St. Pete when I visit next time for sure. Congrats!

Hi Doug,

I doubt that my abiu will do as well as the ones in Costa Rica. Mine is in a large pot and did okay outside the past 2 winters (albeit temps didn't get too low this year). Can't wait to taste as all the reports are so positive. I recently bought some seeds from Bill (konaseeds.com) to grow and see how the ones from Hawaii taste.

Thoroughly enjoyed both videos Adam. Nice work!

Congratulations!

Was this planted from seed if so how long did it take?

Thanks!

I bought it from Abimael777 in January, 2016 and it was 26" tall. Have to admit that I didn't do much
with it for the first 2 years and more recently it really responded to a lower PH, liquid iron with micro nutrients and
Oscomote.

Anybody growing this? I would love some info on these especially if anybody in the group is growing them.
Thank you.

Lots of good information posted; just do a search using either name.

The link is not working (on my end). Problem loading.

Same here

I have the same issue with one of my pomegranate trees. I'm afraid to try anything right now because it
has 2 fruit growing on it. My other 2 pom. trees are growing up straight so far.

Wow, that's crazy cheap for jackfruit. It's 2$ / pound here. Sometimes 3$.

One of these days I will try one of these!!! I have no ideal if I would like it, but I see a lot of people buying them, some are 20 +  pounders.

Was that at Sanwa Farmer's Market?

I didn't see any at Mustang last weekend.

Easy to tell it's fake; the blue section should be on the left.  ;)

I think this one and the pink pumpkins are my favorites:
