Question on plantains
« on: April 11, 2019, 02:30:10 AM »
Does anyone have success with dwarf Puerto Rican plantains?  I love fried green plantains and I have tried to grow them and have killed about 4 so far.  I have 4 different banana varieties and they are thriving.
Usually if we have a heavy rain, it kills them slowly.  I know I have heavy soil and I do try to amend it, but. It is frustrating to grow bananas with ease and not something that is basically the same plant.
Are there any other varieties that people are having luck growing?

Plantains are much more vulnerable to root problems than bananas.  Commercial growers apply nematicide every six months.  We try to plant clean material and move the suckers to fresh soil with every harvest to keep ahead of problems.
