Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cecropia Peltata Growth Rate
« on: October 15, 2021, 09:25:48 AM »
I've heard mixed things about this fruit's palatability. Has anyone tasted it?

Yeah, ours is fruiting. Tastes like a super watered down fig...like sugar water with not too much sugar and a somewhat herbal aftertaste.

I saw a YouTube video of a tour of a South Florida fruit collector's property. Cecropia was one of the many fruits tried by the people in the video. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. Perhaps there is some flavor variation from tree to tree. Or, just variation in people's palates. That is why, when I am considering getting a new fruit plant, I either try some of the fruit or peruse reviews of those who have tried it.

I doubt there is much variation in cecropia fruit, I have tried fruit from 2 trees now exact same taste. It's more of a texture as the taste is very faint, not unpleasant just leaves a lot to be desired. You would have to try it to know what I mean.

Awesome tree and fruit just wish the taste was on par.

You're in luck! A pineapple is not just a pineapple, there are many varieties...some even have edible cores, different colors, etc...Some produce many pups, some few pups.

Here's a list of a few of the different types:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Mangos 2021
« on: July 28, 2021, 11:08:23 AM »
This is the second year that I had a crop on Cotton Candy. My tree was planted as a 3 gallon the first year they were available.
Last year I had 13 fruit, 11 of which ripened so unevenly that they were terrible, hard very unripe flesh on about 25 percent of each individual fruit, maybe 25 percent delicious, and overripe mango death on half of each fruit. The two perfect fruit were the best mangoes of the year last year. They had some MBSS and were done by the first week of July last year.
THIS YEAR, almost no MBSS, the crop was about 40 fruit, picked the first fruit about mid June, about 2 weeks later than last year. Still had uneven ripening on 80 percent of fruit, but not as bad as last year. Maybe 40 percent of the fruit had some uneven ripening but were fully edible and pretty good.  About 20 percent were awesome.
That still leaves about 40 percent of the fruit that only had some edible portions. A small percentage of fruit cracked after heavy rains. I picked at various stages of ripening and still had uneven ripening issues no matter when they were picked. Tree is still holding about a half dozen fruit now on July 28th.
Wondering if the uneven ripening will improve as the tree ages or if I should top work the tree this year. Two years in a row it has been on my best AND worst list.....
Just my two cents but I say give it more time. What I really want to know is how is  Little Gem this season. I have four on the tree that I have not picked yet.

I'd give it some more time Tony just to make sure, but that's just me.

Bovine, our Lil' Gem was decent (1st year in ground) but it didn't compare to the fruit Tony gave us at the end of last season, that was top notch!

I too was interested in your discussion of picking and ripening Mallika mango. Hopefully there will be more discussion and videos about Picking and ripening the different varieties. Especially in the interior. Tasting mangoes is subjective even Gary said if you taste a mango from this tree today and come back and try another one tomorrow it will be different  It's a snapshot in time and can differ by location. Some of the mangoes that were tremendous last season I've been a little disappointing for me this season. Could just be a matter of timing of picking and ripening. It could very well be that some varieties have a fluctuation in taste from year to year. It does make for interesting discussion. So far Dot and Carrie are my favorite girls. But I have to say Karen Michelle is a sweety❤

Bovine, no love for Ugly Betty?!?! :'(

Evolutionary biologists, on the other hand, say that it was the extra protein of eating meat that gave homo sapiens the larger brain and higher intelligence.  (But look where that has gotten us!)

Lol, yes all that meat was the ticket and not all the fruit ;)

Little Gem is an excellent mango, beautiful tree as well.

I would take all but on the other coast of course :'(
