Bought this off ebay listed as a spondias purpurea, just making sure are these the right fruit and right time of harvest

The ones in the first pic are ripe like that.  Seems to be s. purpurea, jocote.

Yup. Definitely not S. purpurea.

Dwarf ambarella is still pretty good though. By the time it's yellow I think its way too ripe. I prefer them green and crunchy. You can even eat them when they're really young because then the seed is edible too. Once they're yellow the seed is too hard to eat.

Thanks for the proper ID and info. I tried the fruit and it was woody, green sour tasting, so i'll try the green ones next.
