Thanks a bunch for sharing Oscar...I have them all in my collection  ::) ;D

Don't think there is any eugenia that is poisonous. But there are plenty that are not very palatable or with almost nothing to eat.

Hi Oscar,
Thanks for answering my ?  :) Since there are plenty that are not palatable and very little to eat...then it's bird chow ;D At least there is no poisonous eugenia sp. that we know of 8)

I was thinking that some of these Eugenia species must have come about from natural cross pollination with other Eugenia species. At least that's suggested in Lorenzi's book. I guess it would be a game of trial and error to figure out which Eugenia species are compatible. I see that Eugenia tomasii is not on the list yet so I still have time...

It is there and written correctly E . mattosii .

Tomas was a little confused wanting to read his own name Tomassii.....lol...

But I am still talking about another one ......suspense...oh well maybe it turns out edible but not worth mentioning .

or how about the new species from e-jardim that looks like a smooth pitangatuba?  It's still not been given an official name.

No Oscar ,not that one , at this moment I am down to 28 eugenias , lost a few...

I did not count those on the list you posted but I seem to remember reading somewhere that there are over 1000 sp including ornamentals .

Yes that is right  Luc. There are over 1000 accepted species names for Eugenias, 1011 to be exact. See the bottom of this page for the stats and full species list:

Hola Oscar, hoy hablé con un viverista que tiene eugenia repanda (acá la llamamos ñangapirí negro...) y dice que su sabor es bueno, una mezcla entre pitanga y jambos.

Parece que es de crecimiento lento y que fructifica bastante bien en lugares sombreados.
Espero conseguir algunos ejemplares.

Hi Oscar, today I spoke to a nursery that has eugenia repanda (black ñangapirí ...) and says that it tastes good, a mix between pitanga and jambos.

It seems to be slow growing and fruiting quite well in shady places.

That's good to hear that the taste is good. I am growing some that someone in Buenos Aires sent me seeds. Seems like they are slow growing?

Looks nice, thanks for the photo. What size is the fruit? Is it similar size to surinam cherry?

In the Helton's webpage he wrote, 1,5 to 2cm

So, small fruits, but the people who tasted it said it was sweet and good.

Today I found 2 ripening fruits by surprise in one of the poted plants!

it is in a very tiny pot, so I should repot and fertilize...

Great! Let us know how they are when you get to taste the repanda?
