Artocarpus ID?
«

Hi folks,
Can anyone help ID this tree? It's about three years old and has sandpaper-like leaves. Perhaps a variety of breadfruit or other Artocarpus? Thank you.

Breadfruit
Jak fruit
Kwai muk
Lakoocha
Chempedak

It looks to be a pedalai. Breadfruit have darker leaves, and in the pictures, the leaf lobes are more round compared to a breadfruit.

My vote is for juvenile pedalai (Artocarpus Sericicarpus)!

Thanks folks! If it's Pedalai, that's the best news I've heard all day! Just looked up some examples online and it sure appears to be Artocarpus sericicarpus. Fingers crossed I see hairy, Marang-like fruits on there one day soon!
Much appreciated!

Here’s a pic of a seedling and one that’s a couple years older. Leaves are kinda busted up but hope it helps.

Thanks a ton. I feel like I just hit the forest jackpot. Pedalai’s been on my list of trees to grow, and it sounds like it’s been here in front of me all along. Thanks for helping to ID this beauty! Happy to share seeds when she bears fruits.

Juvenile foliage varies a bit within species of Artocarpus. Pedalai is the most likely but there are 4 or 5 other contenders like sparrow jack and utu.

Does anyone have a photo of a young Cempedek they can share? Curious if Cempedek is a real contender as the plant ID after all. Tricky these juvenile Artocarpus leaf patterns that mirror each other in some ways.. Thank you.

Chempadak is much like jackfruit and I won't go to the yard and take a pic. Zero chance you seedling is a chempa.

Roger that. Fingers crossed it’s a Pedalai tree well on its way to fruiting. I’ll post once I know for sure. Thank you!
