Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hawaii peak soursop and other fruit seasons
« on: October 14, 2019, 09:03:34 PM »
I tried searching and found some info but can anyone comment on the peak time for the tastiest soursops? What months does the overall soursop season span? Is there a best island to be on?

I’m planning a trip to Hawaii and really love soursop... altho I love all tropical fruits. Are there good tasting events or best is to just go to farmers markets?

Trying to also research best time to be for best mango varieties, lychee, longan, papaya, guava and have never tried ice cream bean, jaboticaba...

Sounds like anytime is a good time to visit Hawaii for fruit just depends what you want. Tryin to plan a trip, I know this has been asked a bunch, but wondering if there is updated info esp for soursop!

This is awesome!!! Thanks so much for the informative post, event sounds amazing! Reminded me of a recent fig tasting gathering--50+ awesome varieties with rookies tapping out after the first 7 or so :D :D, a beautiful madness.

thank you all, does strawberry do well in socal? I agree it looks like it could be strawberry or a relative. I don't think it was a rare type or anything, likely something commonly found. But it was excellent

Tropical Fruit Discussion / SoCal papaya variety ID

Hi all,

I had a really really good papaya 2 years ago home grown around Pasadena. It was small to medium in size with excellent flavor. I snapped a pic of the interior, I'm pretty sure this is the pic (even though it looks like a mamey). I think I must've scooped out the seeds????

If I want to plant variety similar to this which do ppl think it is? Vibrant deep red-orange flesh and excellent flavor. Was productive. I could've had the smallest one on tree so maybe can't judge by fruit size... but I really don't remember. Sorry my memory of its details are vague.

Thoughts?

Thank you so much for confirming this is soursop! So now that I know it was soursop... is there any place in Southern California I can buy a yummy/quality one to eat?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit ID confirm, soursop?

Hi everyone! I was wondering if someone could confirm if this is indeed a soursop. It has little spines you can see and was not just sweet but also had some acidity. Not overbearingly acid or just straight up sour like a lime. It had very good sweet and tart balance like a really ripe pineapple.

I've only had a few cherimoya which were from LA farmers markets and these had zero/near zero acidity. I actually didn't care for them too much. Should I try cherimoya somewhere else or maybe they are just not my thing? Tried them in various ripeness stages but all from same source.

The fruit from my pic for ID was from a friend's home tree in Praia (Santiago Island) in Cape Verde. He called it pinha which online is Portuguese for sugar apple which confused me... but this is soursop right? Wanted to check with the experts. One of the most amazing fruits I've ever had. Had an intense burst of flavor with amazing sweet-tart balance. I tracked down some soursop in a large Spanish grocery store near me, paid good money for it, and let it ripen till soft and mushy which it almost already was when I purchased it actually, the skin of one next to it at the store broke very easily with a slight touch... so it did have some sweet and tart and seemed to have a somewhat similar flavor profile but was just not even close to the intensity of the flavor/was bland compared to the home grown Cape Verdean fruit it made me wonder if I got the fruit right.

Is there somewhere recommended to purchase yummy soursop assuming that's what this is?
