Everglades.com
Me and my friend bought over 50 trees from them. Good size trees, wrapped carefully, and their rootstock is healthy mature trees.

Are you sure you've got that URL correct? Looks like an alligator farm, not a tree nursery.

Sorry, it is everglades.farm
Just ordered 2 .ore trees and they are both very healthy.

My Dad had a tree in our grove moved once because of some work that was being done. It was about 8x8. It had to be dug with a trackhoe in July (just about the worst time there is to move a lychee tree). I told him it would not work and that he would be better off planting a new tree. I was wrong. That tree is still alive today and going strong. He did cover it with shade cloth and watered it regularly misting the foliage. It dropped about half of its leaves, but was recovered in about a year. It can be done.

Thanks!! Your dad's experience makes me decided to go ahead and relocate them. I hate to kill good healthy trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is it worth the effort to move a Lychee Tree?
« on: February 26, 2024, 09:35:23 PM »
We are redoing the landscape and need to relocate some trees. They are about 4,5 years in ground from 5-7 gallon size. We did move some trees before from our old house to this one. It takes a lot of effort and time. I have a Brewster and a Mauritius. They are both about 4x4 ft in size now. Last year they had a few fruits.
Please share your experience with moving lychee trees. Will it hurt the tree too much and we will better off planting new trees? I am experienced with moving citrus, guava, mango, and carambola. Citrus is the easiest one. I can cut the root to 1/3 and they will bounce back in 6 months.
Any shared experience will be highly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anna Carambola/ Star fruit
« on: February 14, 2024, 06:48:47 PM »
Anyone in TFF is the owner of Florida Fruit Geek blog?
https://floridafruitgeek.com/

I am very interested to know more of this Anna Carambola.
My Sri Kembangan was always holding fruit to maturity when we lived in Glendale. Delicious fruit!
Then we moved to Sun Valley, almost 5 years in the ground, and only once it held one fruit when the winter was mild.
It planted in a very fertile garden soil and protected in the corner by 2 walls. The tree thrives, and always blooms thousands of flowers every August/ September. Most flowers turn into small fruits, but then the winter hits and all the small fruits fall off.

If anyone has this Anna variety and can sell and ship me some bigger size scions, i will topwork my Sri Kembangan.
The Florida fruit geek is not shipping plant material unfortunately.

Thanks for reading!

My Sabara is doing fine with native soil, city water, and full 12 hours sun. It was a 5 gallon when we put it in ground. From the beginning it never fussy and very well adapted to harsh summer with hot Santa Ana wind here. The only thing we do is put 3" of mulch around it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Got to try a Golden Soursop!
« on: February 10, 2024, 09:26:31 AM »
There are some sellers for the seeds, even seedling, that ship to US. Just check on ebay and etsy.
Tropical Plantae in Puerto Rico sells the seedling. I purchased some trees from them, it is hit and miss with them since they shipped the trees bareroot with just a tiny amount of soil.
Out of 3 trees I got from them, only one survived.
Question is, how cold hardy is this Golden Soursop?
I am struggling to grow the green one here in zone 10A. Anyone knows the cold hardiness of the golden one?

If you just want one cutting, I should be able to get another one from my source who has a tree he grew from the original tree/source. When I go see him, I will remember to get one for you.

If the person can sell 2 cuttings to me, it would be greatly appreciated.
One if for rooting, and another one for grafting. Since I have brown thumbs, I have not succedded rooting some of my own fig cuttings.

13
I have a few cuttings that I'm rooting now.

I did see that there are two source on figbid now.

Thanks, Kaz!
Do you plan to sell some of your rooted cuttings later?
If so, I will just wait for it then.

Anyone has Robert's Golden Rainbow Fig Tree- aka Ben's Golden Riverside?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: ISO Orton Cherimoya
« on: January 23, 2024, 04:29:39 PM »
Mimosa nursery is very bad with their inventory. When I bought my Orton, they did not even know they have Orton!
I just walked around the nursery and read the labels one by one.
There was another Vietnamese lady whom I met there, she bought the Orton too.
In a year her Orton produced 5 huge fruits, and she said they were ones of the best annonas she ever had. She has about 15 varieties of annonas, and a very experienced gardener, so I trust her.
Mine never hold it's fruit, because my area is the worst for annonas.

is the santol variety "koetjape" any good? ive been thinking abt getting a santol tre
e
We had a tree when I was a kid. It has good flavor, sweet sour with a kick of tropical aroma. But not much flesh, mostly seeds. I would say it is not worth growing in your zone, which you will need to keep in the green house.
I will take any Zill mango variety over a ketjape any day.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hand Pollination - passiflora decaisneana
« on: October 14, 2023, 12:24:19 PM »
I have another question for you folks growing the passiflora decaisneana. My vine has been blooming flowers now since July 2023 - October 2023, is this normal?

For the last 2 months, I have had to go outside every day about 10am to hand pollinate the darn thing since it pops up new flowers ready for me to hand pollinate it. I did notice that in the month of August and September (SoCal) I got the most fruit set from my hand pollination work. I thought the vine stopped having flowers last week, but now that it got a little warmer (85F +) the flowers are starting up again.

Mine was also flowering non-stop from February-November here inland zone 10A. It was still flowering when my Possum Purple stop due to the cold air in winter.

So, I would like to know if your vines do the same thing, flower for 4 months long. This vine is just one graft I did on the p.edulis vine 2-3yrs ago.

Congrats! Did you grow it from seed? How old is it? I have killed many seedlings here. So your success story inspired me.

Here is what is fruiting:

Passiflora Edulis var flavicarpa (Hawaiian Lilokoi yellow)

Passiflora Edulis 'Frederick'

Passiflora Edulis 'Galaxy' (this was bought at Ricardo's nursery in Anaheim.

Passiflora Phoenicia 'Ruby Glow'

Passiflora Edulis 'Golden Sweet' (also bought at Ricardo's)

I have the following flowering as well: passiflora caerulea, passifora incaranata, passiflora incense. Passiflora Edulis 'Columbia Red' will be flowering soon. Passiflora Lingularis is now 4 years old and neither have flowered.

I have about 20 or so other varieties either in seedlings or newly acquired plants that I am waiting for flowering: nigradenia, antioquiensis, tarminiana, mollissima, laurifolia, cumbalensis, pinnatistipula, serrulata, maliformis, platyloba, quadrangularis,  and quite a few edulis hybrids.

What is the sweetest one that does not need hand pollination or cross pollination?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Taiwan Trip
« on: September 08, 2023, 09:48:07 PM »
I'm headed to Taiwan in late December to tour the entire island on cycle route 1. This probably isn't the ideal time for fruit but regardless I was hoping to get an advice from locals or others who have visited. Especially interested in worthwhile markets or farms that I can try to include on my journey.
I forgot to tell you, December is a good month for fresh vegetables, especially cabbage. Taiwan's cabbage is the most delicious vegetable I've ever eaten. They usually just simply stirr fried it with garlic. It tasted sweet, tender but crunchy, and has a nice addictive flavor. Taiwanese believes it because of the fresh spring mineral water from Mount Alishan where it mostly grown. It is weird how I can be addicted to cabbage, but I  did.
For the best taste you should eat them right away after it stir fried. There are plenty of made by order restaurants around Feng Chia. Just pick the most crowded one, you cannot go wrong.

Diana, ok, I have good and bad news for you. My passiflora decaisneana is growing like crazy, and this month it started to have lots of flowers. None of them had set fruit until 2 weeks ago when I hand pollinated (self pollinate) with it's own pollen. Immediately after I hand pollinated the flower, it set fruits within 3-4 days.

So, if you want fruits, you will need to manually hand pollinate the flowers. This year (3rd year) my vine has tons of flowers so when I get chance to hand polllinate them every day, only those are the ones holding fruit. I might have 10 fruits starting now, and maybe another 50 small flower buds that will open every day (3-7) so it could be a huge crop of fruits this season for me.

Now I will need to figure out how to support these heavy fruits before they get to full size. My vine is growing all over the place, mixed with my purple vine, and growing in/over my blood orange tree and avocado tree. Also starting to grow into my persimmon tree, loquat tree, and mulberry tree. Next year I will trim it and make a trellis, now that I can move around better (knee surgery went well).

I guess the vine just needed to be older (3-4yrs) since grafting it. All is good.

Thanks for the news, Kaz. It is good but bad news.
The fruit is delicious, but hand pollinating the flowers is really an additional chore aside from keep trimming the super fast growing vine.
Please let me know how your fruit tastes when they are ripe, Kaz. Mine has some lychee undertone.

I forgot to mention, pay attention if you see a pick up truck on side of the street. Farmers are often sell their fruit directly to consumers this way.
The pineapple should be in season, and they will cut it for you on the spot.
Guava is all year round.
If you happen to visit Feng Chia Night Market, look for a lady street vendor who sells Milk Guava. The best guava ever. She used to open her table on the right side of Feng Chia University main gate.

I have lived in Taichung for about 7-8 years, and Taoyuan for 2 years. I am ashamed that I have never visited any farmer market when I was there. Usually i just go to any traditional market nearby or night market, and just buy whatever fruit in season. Over there the street vendor offer different variant of food and beverage every hundred feet, so I was too busy eating them instead of fruit..
