Nice looking tree Rob! That thing is nice and green

What’s up Brad, please give an update in a week or so, I’m really curious to see how your tree handled these stupid winds

Hey Simon! Now that is something to be “Thankful” for! I don’t need to say this but...AWESOME work on the yangmei trials!!! :) :) :) Some really cool stuff you’re doing man and I congratulate you!!! Please keep the updates coming, learning a lot from you, thank you.

Update on my trees:

Grafted Biqi from the group order is doing great but has kinda slowed down on the growth, probably because of the colder weather, planning to plant it in the ground next week.

My first three seedlings all died after attempting to transplant into bigger pots, I believe I used too much mycorrhizae on the roots when transplanting, I mean they were dead by that evening, very sensitive, I’ve never had seedlings die after transplant and mycorrhizae, at least not that fast.

After the loss I got a couple more and Nate (Wildlands plants) was super kind in hooking up a nice size seedling, and now all three of those are thriving inside an unheated hoop house that’s under the patio cover, and up against the house. I also have a bowl of water in there for some humidity. I up potted them all to one gallons, without mycorrhizae, and they didn’t skip a beat.

Slow and steady is the way to go with these guys...

Ps nice meeting you at the fruit tasting party Simon! ;) It was nice talking with you.

Happy Turkey Day :) It would be great to see some pictures of the Eugenias, there’s hardly any info out there about the ones Andre have listed. Thanks

Thanks Janet. Happy to hear the Gros Michel is doing good, they do not like the cold, at all, so do what you can to keep her warm :)

Hey Janet! Your garden looks very beautiful! You should have that picture you posted painted and hung in your home...Do you need to do anything special when converting the starch into sugar for two weeks or just leave on counter?

Growing great under my banana trees, this vine is from an orange one that started to sprout on our counter so we threw it in the dirt, I had no idea it would grow so well. We harvested some of them a couple weeks ago and they were great. They had more of a creamy consistency than the store bought ones. Does anyone know if you’re suppose to let them sit out or something for a while to get rid of some of the starch?

Hi, I’m looking to acquire 4-6 Beaumont Macadamia Nut scions for next spring (2022). We can work out a price or trade, I’m open. I’d like for the scions to be girdled on the tree in January and scions picked up/shipped in March. Diameter of scions should be approx 3/8 to 5/8 inch thick and the scion wood should be mature and from the previous flush. If you can help me out please let me know. Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dragon Fruit - Hand Pollination
« on: November 07, 2021, 01:23:23 AM »
You don’t really need to hand pollinate yellow dragon fruit, at least not the variety I have (giant magalanthus), the stigma is so close to the pollen it pollinates itself. I didn’t hand pollinate this year and got 5/5 fruit set. Which variety of yellow are you growing Kaz?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Starfruit- Anyone Growing It ?

Hey Kaz here’s a pic of my Fwang Tung. It’s flowering and holding small fruit right now. It grows well here and the fruit is great. It also has a really nice star shape that my kids love. I have read there is something in carambola that can damage your kidneys, but I think its only if you have a pre-existing condition, and I think you have to eat a lot of it and it’s only on the edge of the fruit, so if you cut that part off it’s safe to eat. I got my tree from Emily Nursery in Santa Ana, I haven’t been there in a while but he usually has a nice selection of carambola trees, talk to Mike.

Thank you all very much for the suggestions! I just bought the TJ’s Nut Cracker.

@buddyroo, the pvc cutters worked great in a pinch, way better than my workbench vise I’ve been using.

A friend with a macadamia nut grove speaks highly of the crack-a-mac. They get theirs in bulk direct from Australia, but the product is also available on e-bay and Amazon from what I have seen. It works well from the demonstrations I have seen and produces mostly whole nuts.
Thanks for the info. I’ve seen the crack a mac around but that thing looks like a carpal tunnel waiting to happen...I think in the long run a lever/push down type system would be better but it seems like most of them crack the nut in half. I’d like to find one that leaves the nut whole.
