Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing true dates in South Florida
« on: June 24, 2012, 11:52:04 AM »
Is anyone growing true dates in South Florida?  I found this interesting article:

I am wondering if anyone has gotten some edible dates grown here.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Zinc and its application to the Mango Tree
« on: April 23, 2012, 11:42:13 AM »
Since Zinc usually is not brought up as a topic.  I thought it would be a good idea to cover it in a thread and learn from each other.

I am interested in knowing the different forms that our tropical fruit forum members are supplying the Zinc needs for Mango trees:

Are you using Foliar sprays containing Zinc, if so which one and how much per year are you applying?

Are you using Fertilizers containing Zinc, if so which one and how much per year are you applying?

Are you using another method to apply Zinc, if so which one and how much per year are you applying?

Zinc can help to avoid Mango Decline according to this article:

I have heard Cherimoyas do not do well in Florida, but, thought I would ask this anyways. ;D  Is anyone growing Cherimoyas in Florida?

Update 9/2/2014:

Changed Subject of thread from:

Dream Cherimoya, a variety that fruits in FL !  Introduced by Wayne Clifton

To:

Dream Atemoya, a variety that fruits in FL !  Introduced by Wayne Clifton

Reason: New information shows that the "Dream" variety of Annona is possibly an Atemoya instead of a Cherimoya.

As many of you might know, Noel gave a talk on his Tropical Fruit Safari Trip to Puerto Rico this past Monday, February 6, 2012 at the Broward Rare Fruit and Vegetable Council.  Here is more info on the past event:

It is great to see people like Noel who take the time to teach others about Tropical Fruit Trees.  It was a great talk and I learned alot from it.  Good Job Noel.

I would like to know if anyone is growing persimmons in South Florida.  Which variety are you growing, how old is it and is it fruiting?  If you can post a picture of the tree that would be nice.

Thanks,
Adiel

I want to make a list of all the varieties of Mamey being grown in Florida.  I will start out with 4:

-Pantin
-Magaņa
-Pace
-Viejo

If you are growing a variety in Florida not on the list, please state its name, age and if its fruiting...

I am looking for a single list, if you see one on the list, dont list it again. :o

Thanks!

Does anyone know how to speed up the growth and get a Green Sapote to fruit?  I know that the Green Sapote is a slow grower but I didn't realize exactly how slow until I planted one a year ago!  :o  If anyone has any findings on how to speed things up, please share.  :D

Thanks,
Adiel

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dorsett Golden Apple tree has one fruit on it
« on: January 26, 2012, 04:22:35 PM »
I was waiting for April/May for my Dorsett Golden apple tree to flower and then like usual not produce any fruit.  I was caught by surprise when my Dad found one fruit on the tree now in January:

It looks like it is self pollinating and produces fruit in South Florida!  I think it might be due to the strange weather we've had?  Any body else has any experience growing apples in South Florida?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Which variety of sapodilla do you recommend?
« on: January 26, 2012, 01:25:57 PM »
I have one sapodilla tree but not sure the variety.  I dont like the taste too much because its not too sweet and its very "sandy".  I remember tasting one that was really good.  Which varieties do you guys recommend for flavor and that dont have that "sand" feeling?

Who still has avocados in January and what variety? Also can you post a picture of your tree and rate its flavor if possible.  Also mention if you would recommend it to others and the location (city/state) where you are growing it.

Thanks,
Adiel
