Oh you have Lucida! I've been looking for a replacement for my failed graft.
Wait, campos is the same as spain?

no Campos is from Spain, not to be confused with Campas. Campos looks like El Bumpo

The nursery I bought my Campas tree from (8 years ago?  I'll have to dig through my records) told me that Campas is from Spain where it was a commercial prospect, but did not fair well in transport and so wasn't widely planted.  My tree has been the source of scions for several members here.  Below are photos of some of the first fruit I harvested... it does have protrusions like El Bumpo, is self-pollinating, and can produce some good sized fruit.

Here's another photo of Campas fruit from this year... less protrusions on this one.  Delicious fruit.

The picture is from JF and is label as campUS.  Is this the same as Campos or campas?  I am very confuse.

That is a good looking fruit!  It appears to be different from what I have as Campas (which should be the same as what JF and Behl have as Campas).  My Campas tree has broader/wider leaf structure and more 'typical' cherimoya fruit structure (namely "plates") than what you are showing as Campus.

As an aside, I second JF's earlier comment - great selection Behl!  For anyone looking for Campas scions, please reach out to the author of this thread (Behl) - my posting here was meant to help clarify/understand the difference between Campas and Campus only.

Added very limited Cherisop cherimoya wood.

Due to extrement cold sub 40 degree temps, I have not pruned anything, its not good as it can cause dieback on my trees. I will prune once weather stabilizes, around 2nd week of March.

Behl, the photo of Campos fruit looks much more like atemoya than cherimoya (i.e. Leaves are pinnate, not as broad); also, searching for Campos and Campas in Google, I find several earlier scientific references to Campas (and alternately Campa) in Spain - but few for Campos.

i.e. This article: https://books.google.com/books?id=AxbUJntXepEC&pg=PA77&lpg=PA77&dq=campas+cherimoya&source=bl&ots=hxxLm2bL0M&sig=EJvlfWTjOIfTKosmwXlwfFeJ30g&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjMwuPVmc_ZAhVQ1WMKHXYtCLgQ6AEwCXoECAUQAQ#v=onepage&q=campas%20cherimoya&f=false (https://books.google.com/books?id=AxbUJntXepEC&pg=PA77&lpg=PA77&dq=campas+cherimoya&source=bl&ots=hxxLm2bL0M&sig=EJvlfWTjOIfTKosmwXlwfFeJ30g&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjMwuPVmc_ZAhVQ1WMKHXYtCLgQ6AEwCXoECAUQAQ#v=onepage&q=campas%20cherimoya&f=false)

if you think of it, please don't ship mine until Monday.  I'd hate for them to get stuck in a post office over the weekend.

All orders that were paid (as of morning of Mar 8, 2018) were harvested today, sealed, packed, and shipped (Except Mark's per his request, that will go out on Monday). You should receive emails directly from Paypal over shipping status. You may start receiving it Saturday thru Monday (In CA) and by Tuesday-Wed out of state.  Please note the following:

1. All budwood open ends were dipped into wax and sealed, USDA employs this technique in sealing budwood and it works great.
2. No need to remove wax, simply graft the normal way you do, make sure to wrap the wood with buddy tape or whatever you normally use.
3. Added moist vermiculite and moist paper towel to retain moisture, sealed in sandwich bags.
4. I mixed sizes so you have choice. Some varieties wood may be thin by nature, but every wood has exposed nodes that are plump and ready to push.
5. In some cases where a variety was short, I substituted with another top tier. Some were contacted and got consent from them. If you are not happy about what you get, let me know and I can either refund OR send again in 2-3 months.
6. Included some freebies.

Would love your feedback on quality of wood and condition you get them. Happy grafting  8) 8)

Those who didn't get first batch shipped last week will get their orders shipped out on Tuesday so keep an eye for email from Paypal.

Those who have shown interest and yet to send payments, please do so.  Time is running out. Weather after next weekend is going to be on the warmer side perfect to graft anonas, mother trees start their first push towards 3rd week of March depending on where you are. IN my yard, its weird I am seeing new growth at the same time old leaves are yet to drop.

Ditto on all accounts.  He sure went above and beyond regarding care and gifting a top tier variety.   Being that cherimoya is new to me he's been super helpful regarding support and questions regarding the culture via emails.

due to inclement weather here in So Cal, Rains, and extreme cold temps at nights (36-39), I have not pruned or cut any new material for later payments/orders yet. Cutting anona branches in this cold could send branches into shock and kill them. happens quite often. So, those who are waiting for wood may have to wait another week for weather to stabilize. also, if you didn't order yet, now may be a good time to do so.

Hi Behl, mine are beginning to push.  Here's hoping they don't dry up.  I did cleft grafts and two veneer grafts due to a large girth disparity between rootstock and scion.

I expect seedlings and a few scions by USPS this Thursday of cherimoya and one atemoya.

Mark, yes in Anona residual push is a possibility, it normally doesn't dry out but the rootstock branch grafted on dies for some non compatible reasons. It happens every once in a while.

We have a two master grafters and growers here, I'm talking about two avid gardeners who have grafted literally thousands of tropicals successfully, and all but one plant failed (El Bumpo) between the two of them a year or so ago.  That's why I'm not holding my breath, just keeping my fingers crossed.

Cherimoyas take easily like stone fruits as long as your rootstock is coming out of dormancy and is in active push stage, Scion is fresh, and no incompatibility kicking in. out of every 10 I do, I get 1 that kills the branch, dont ask me why, LOL

All grafts are pushing including 2 iffy veneer grafts.  Also pushing are some gifted Campas cleft grafts.  Am holding my breath.

Behl, am storing the leftover scions in the fridge at 40F to gift to another AFTER confirmation that mine are going to be OK.  Any problem with that?  I've stored citrus, avocado, and mango scions for up to 6 weeks or so and usually gotten 100% takes.

Mark

Mark, Glad to see it push. I shipped wood the same day I cut, wood was sealed within 15 minutes of cutting to keep freshness. I would not store for too long because my tree was not dormant when I cut wood off, dormant wood can be stored for may be 2 weeks max, but Anona goes down hill quick after 10 days. Dormancy is set in when all leaves drop naturally, that happens in my yard around late April to early May.

Did you mean they come out of dormancy late April?

Also, are you inferring that the cold storage will put them into a state of dormancy (even though were shipped dormant) and screw them up so they don't "wake up"

Sorry, am damn confused LOL.  ;D

Dormancy is dependent upon location you are in a and your temps. If you put wood in refrigerator (assuming not below 45F), when you graft they wake up instantly given your hot temps outside. it actually helps. but viability goes down each day they are not grafted. All wood that I sent was sealed at cut ends, but needs to be buddy taped and stored properly. it could be stored for up to 10 days.

Dumb question, because I know nothing about annona physiology - why are they going dormant now?  Like other trees don't they respond to increasing temps and/or day length?  My grafts are all pushing well, I just need a feel of what's coming next.

Thanks

Because Anona new growth leafs out from under leaf node, as node swells, leaf falls allowing new growth. Makes sense?

yep Mark. note that I strip leaves and expose nodes 1-week before harvesting wood, so they are full of energy and ready to pop. Most folks should get high rate of success given weather and time of the year and grafting skills. should be over 90% success.

most folks who got wood 2 weeks ago must have gotten takes (non- CA) as its warmer elsewhere.

glad to hear. So Cal is getting a mini heat wave today and last 2 and next 3 days are going to be in high 80's, enough to push new grafts.

Been weird weather here from hot to damn cold a couple of days ago - 37F.  It's 41F now at 6:50 a.m.  All of my grafts are pushing including two iffy veneer.  Removed the rubber bands and the buddy tape covering the veneer grafts and the top of the chopped off rootstock is brown and firm.  Rest are cleft drafts.  So, multigrafted tree has 1 Pierce, 1 Sabor, and 2 Behl from my order and 2 gifted Campas sticks.....all are pushing well.

Thanks again for the nice wood!

Mark, don't remove tape for at least 6 plus weeks. Size of scions I sent to all, you can tie to rootstock using buddy tape and will not have to remove it. Union is fragile at this stage.

All orders have been fulfilled. thanks for ordering and best of luck for takes. I did my best in sending you all prime wood.  Only few varieties left, while trees are starting to push new growth while leaves have not been shed yet. if anyone wants more, look at what is left, that is all I can fulfill.

I used rubber bands and removed them.   It's been over 3 weeks since I grafted.  Buddy tape will stay on.  I'll treat them with TLC.

cool. the key to anona grafting that I found was to carefully remove entire leaf and expose the buds, if you do that prep work, in 48-72 hrs your wood is prime for harvest and will take in less than 7 days.

When I received my scions there was still mid 30s weather in our forecast so I felt it was a bad time to graft. Did some searching on this forum and found some old threads where people said cherimoya scions could last in the refrigerator for at least a month. Well that was probably bad advice. I put them in the fridge for two weeks until our weather improved. When I grafted them the scions were all still green but the buds had mostly turned black. I grafted anyway. That was two weeks ago and nothing has pushed yet.

You can possibly put wood in refrigerator only if you wrapped the wood with buddy tape and sealed them well. Cherimoya scions are to be grafted immediately for best results. Sub 40% temp grafting would not have harmed them as your refrigerator was about the same temp.

Cut my thumb (no, not using X-Acto) so I am not cutting anything for about 10-days. That being said, if you have paid after last shipment that went out Week so, I will not be shipping anything until Apr 25th or after. So if you thought you missed out, here is still time to get the order in. End of April I will be hacking everything.

Good to know.  I understand Behl's urgency to graft quickly upon receipt as he wants everyone to be successful but by the same token I don't see why cherimoya would be any different than some other varieties.  I've had good takes on citrus and avocado that were stored in the fridge for at least 6 weeks.  You keep them very slightly damp and at about 36F.  Wet your hand and sling some water droplets into the bag is all you need.

All grafts took and the tree is growing like a weed.  Size of the leaves are deceiving set against the big bottomless pot.  Some of those leaves are as big as my hand.  Even the veneer side grafts took really well which is surprising considering the limited cambium contact they had.  They're the tall ones in the back @ 1:00.

Budwood - Campas, Behl, Sabor, Pierce.

yes, Pierce is very vigorous. The slowest ones are el bumpo, santa rosa and selma and they should not be mixed with others or you will end up with these varieties overshadowed by others.

Behl cherimoya loves light and crumbly soil with a high content of sand?
What acidity of the soil (PH) should be optimal?

Raised bed - large bottomless RootBuilder pots.  (Rain) watered about once a week.  Temps 60F to 95F.  Pot is mulched.  Rootstock soaked in VAM at planting, Osmocote Indoor/Outdoor pills.  Soil is well drained about a 50/50 mix of organics/inorganics....whatever is stockpiled outside and in bags.

When would they be ready to fruit? After 1 or 2 growing seasons post grafting?

Mostly depends on your skills as a gardener.  I usually let my newly grafted avocado trees hold fruit the 2nd year but that's because they're on a well established, robust root system and the grafts/trunks have lignified by the second year.  For example, I grafted four varieties and let 7 Sir Prize, 2 Holidays mature.  The Ardith and Pinkerton fruit dropped.

IOW, your call.  You have to learn how to balance the fruit load with the canopy and root mass no matter what fruit you're growing.

looks like you got it on steroids, lol. start pruning so no branch is longer than 12", you need to train it to stay at 6 feet max height each year after pruning.

actually my grafts from March have grown 3 feet as well, while temps in my area dipped to below 45 several times and we just got started with tipple digit temps.  I will have to prune as well.

Tony, right now its full bloom, I will have Scions late August which will allow you with ample time to graft and get couple flushes out. current growth is tender and will harden by then. I will have all varieties that are on top of the post. Get in touch again in Mid August.

You think I should top this 6' tree back to a foot, really?  Yes, I do want to keep it under 8' but I'm also a pretty good judge as to vigor and recognizing short versus long internodes.  Those internodes seem pretty short to me.

Also, it's a magnet for mealybugs.  After screwing with a few here and there and then finding leaves white with them got the big guns out and soil drenched with imidacloprid and sprayed the bastards with permethrin.

Will the pruned wood make for good budwood now?  It's pretty green and tender.

I do green fresh on green wood graft all the time and its instant hit. make sure first you strip leaves and expose leaf nodes, wait until those nodes swell and then you harvest wood and graft it. this will help you prune.

on prune. yes, I really mean it, do not let any single branch grow longer than 12-18 inches. you want a bushy low height wide canopy. trust me, train your tree now. Lot of folks make a mistake of having main trunk get 6 foot tall. cherimoya trees in my hard start branching at 6 to 12 inches above ground.

Hard to keep the upright shoots at 18’.....ideally you want to keep yr trees at 9-12’ prune heavy in spring and tip in fall to control size.

How tall do you let them get?  Reason I am asking is my father has a tree that needs tipping and pruning.
The tree has never had either.  It is a tall tree about 16 to 18 ft.
It is it not a full healthy looking tree like yours but does have a lot of flowers rt now.
I am actually trying to get out there to his house to hand pollinate.  My father was not aware that hand pollinating was necessary.  He has only managed to get a handful of fruit in the last couple of yrs.
I myself am new to Cherimoya.  Have never tasted one but am looking forward to trying for the first time.
Behl, you, and a few others have inspired me to try out more than just mangos.

Here is a photo of the "Cumbe" cherimoya at a market in Arequipa, Peru a few years ago. I have a few seedlings going, but no fruit yet. Does anyone have photos of their "Cumbes"?

Hey Behl:

My PayPal order was placed on the 11th.  Was I too late to participate in this round of cuttings shipments? I sent a PM before ordering, but have no way of knowing if it was received by you or not.
I understand if the current worldwide situation has changed your ability to take  / ship cuttings and you need to process refunds for those that didn't get in early enough to pre-order.

Thanks for all you do, and stay safe!

Richard

UPDATE: Due to Coronavirus situation and trying not to expose myself and my family, I pushed back shipping to coming Monday so I can do all orders tomorrow and ship them out, one time dropoff to USPS Post Office.

I will stop taking orders starting tomorrow 12 PM PST, those who have not sent payment OR ordered, now is your last opportunity. There is also fear of USPS shutting down in future if things escalate.

Congrats, and happy grafting from Tejas.

I have 5 Behl varieties on a seedling rootstock I did about 2 years ago.   Just pruned the 7' tree back to 4' and it's flowering and pushing foliage.  Is also holding fruit without my help.

Those flowers are so small any one have a clue as to how you're supposed to pollinate cherimoya?  Sorry, know it's been discussed before.

The flowers begin as female when they are about 1/3 open, then over the course of a day or two they fully open and are male. Collect pollen using a #2 paintbrush when you find the fully open male flowers and save it in a glass jar in the fridge or freezer. When you see female flowers, the barely open type, load up a small amount of pollen (too much pollen makes seedy fruit) and evenly apply it inside the female flower. I like to dock one of the three petals between thumb and index so I know it's been pollinated.

Check photos online for male vs female.

Thanks for the kind words.  Trust me, it's been a challenge.  I need to get some pix.  I also have a "Giant Atis" sugar apple that I grafted couple of years ago thanks to the graciousness of a Filipino grower in LA.  It is gorgeous.  Can't wait until it fruits.

If you want to chat sometime PM me with a phone number.  I know a few living in Houston growing all kinds of fruit - mango, avocaodos, annonas, etc.
