Grafts between the white sapote and Tetrameria produces dwarf trees. A C. tetrameira grafted on C. edulis rootstock produces a dwarf tree that after 15 years is about 8 ft tall. I have two, healthy and great producers. The C. tetrameira scion was rated "best" in a taste test by the CRFG many years ago and is propagated under #7. I also have #6, which came in second in the taste test. I reversed the graft sequence, putting a white sapote (C. edulis) on the C. tetrameira rootstock hoping for a reasonable sized tree. Here in CA C. edulis is a huge tree. I have two edulis on tetrameiras, 12 years old, no more than 3 ft tall. Both produce edulis fruits, but the size of a quarter. The C. edulis scion was "Pike", a rather large fruit. The C. tetrameira does only have one seed. much more flesh compared to the C. edulis, but quite a different flavor. I have a small crop of C. tetrameira this year (first time) due to our very strange spring/summer. Flowers were hit by rain and rotted off. A fellow enthusiast has spoken for the seeds this year. Ethan (who posts here) has grown some of the seeds with the intent of grafting an interstock of varying lengths to not dwarf a white sapote so much and have a tree that could be a reasonable dooryard tree. An admirable, but long range project.
