They had trees at the Fullerton arboretum of the wooly white sapote. So somebody in Southern California could get them for you. But in my opinion they tasted really strange, at least the ones there and not so good to eat.

White sapote does not produce true to seed . A grafted one from a good tasting tree would be better. The one Oscar tasted could have been from seed. Named varites homestead, redland, sue bell, bonito springs are all good tasting. I have never tasted woolly.

Depending on who you ask Wolly White Sapote isn't a cultivar, but a separate species. And while I wouldn't mind a graft Wolly White Sapote I don't think that would be easy to find, so I'll settle for a seed.

As i recall the woolies at the Fullerton garden had a cultivar name, so they were grafted trees, yet still not good tasting in my opinion.

I'll have plenty of tetrameria. Bumper crop on.

The taste of the two white and woolly are so dramatically different it supports the two species theory.

However there are strong contra-indications such as how readily they hybridize with white being dominant. To whit I have grown on several seedlings from tetrameria that have no fuzz. My grafted tetra cvs are in a mixed orchards with many white cvs.

The hybrid seed seems to make for a vigorous tree and highly productive compared to species alone.. I say seems due to limited numbers planted. Glad i did it. Fruit quality bitter near skin. Flavour sort of in between.

Tetra flesh to seed ratio is fantastic. If whites were the same then maybe whites would finally be a commercial proposition. Largish fruit and one seed only. Can't recall two seed ever.

Grafts between the white sapote and Tetrameria produces dwarf trees.  A C. tetrameira grafted on C. edulis rootstock produces a dwarf tree that after 15 years is about 8 ft tall.  I have two, healthy and great producers.  The C. tetrameira scion was rated "best" in a taste test by the CRFG many years ago and is propagated under #7.  I also have #6, which came in second in the taste test.  I reversed the graft sequence, putting a white sapote (C. edulis) on the C. tetrameira rootstock hoping for a reasonable sized tree.  Here in CA C. edulis is a huge tree.  I have two edulis on tetrameiras, 12 years old, no more than 3 ft tall.  Both produce edulis fruits, but the size of a quarter.  The C. edulis scion was "Pike", a rather large fruit.  The C. tetrameira does only have one seed. much more flesh compared to the C. edulis, but quite a different flavor.  I have a small crop of C. tetrameira this year (first time) due to our very strange spring/summer.  Flowers were hit by rain and rotted off.  A fellow enthusiast has spoken for the seeds this year.  Ethan (who posts here) has grown some of the seeds with the intent of grafting an interstock of varying lengths to not dwarf a white sapote so much and have a tree that could be a reasonable dooryard tree.  An admirable, but long range project.

Jack, thank you very much for the imput! So edulis is in general much more vigorous grower then tetrameria?

So far I have one tetrameria in ground, grafted on edulis. This one came from southern Spain (Malaga) and is called 'cv Wooly'. On the other hand I recently got from a very nice person scion of the tetrameria #6 and #7. Can't wait to taste the fruit, but I'm afraid it will take 2-3 years. Do you have any pictures of your casimiroas?

Here you go, first is C. edulis grafted on C. tetrameira, 12 years old, with fruit that won't get bigger, but will ripen.  Second is mature C. tetrameira grafted on C. edulis, small tree, normal sized fruit, 15 years old.  Both of these experiments have been duplicated with the same results.  I have 3 dwarfed C. edulis and two dwarfed C. tetrameira.  The dwarfed edulis is far too small, a toy.

Love the picture Jack, I do remember the Wolly White Sapote tree from the visit this summer (its nice touching the velvety feeling leaves). I have never tried the fruit, but from your description it sounds like I need to add one to the collection in the future.

Btw, the Mamey and the Jabo are both doing well. I just repotted the Mamey in a air root pruning container.

That's good to hear Steve, let me know when you get fruit...Felipe scan around in my photos and you'll see the dwarfed edulis with fruit.  Don't post photos enough and obviously screwed up.
