New greenhouse photos
« on: January 18, 2012, 02:38:09 AM »
Since my addiction uh I mean hobby has grown, so has my need for winter protection.  I'm lucky to have a giant grape arbor that was here when I moved in because it made it easier to slap together an even bigger greenhouse for this year.  Not only that but I created a GH inside my new GH for the more tropical stuff.  We've seen plenty of days of hard frost this year and been down to 28F a couple of times but inside the GH the 'main room' has not gotten below 52F.  The other room runs about 10F colder which is good because I want my lychee to get chill units.

The original GH, it is a swing arbor with passion fruit growing over the top during most of the year

with alien invaders

the GH for my Valencia Pride is on the right and the plastic on the left is the new GH

night time with the lights and heater going

looking in through the 'front door', epiphytic cacti on the right, hoyas, salaks, dragon fruit, seedlings straight ahead.  Back wall of the main room (GH inside the GH) on the left.  Dragon fruit and other epicacti probably don't need to be protected as much next year.

Standing at the very back corner shooting towards the sunshine (main room on L).

peek into the main chamber with star apple, rambutan, pulasan, chempedak, wax jambu, garcinias, etc.

I think I might know why I have so many plants (one reason)  one of 2 GH inside the house.  Lots of seedlings, sugar apple, black sapote, peppers, flacourtia, lemon leaf, clove, etc.

The other indoor GH, a few of the extra special ones, durians, mangosteens, Juan's pulasan, cashews, marang, acai, velvet tamarind, recent PR plants and others.  A few plants were brought in just in case the new outdoor GH completely failed.

cant wait for spring to get here,
-Ethan

Yeah...welcome to the addiction!  Lot of work went into that.  With the lights going...looks like you have a Nativity scene going on in there!

Ethan,

Great job with the greenhouse. Love your tropical fruit paradise inside.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Thanks gents for the kind words.

LL, I think I have 3 of Juan's pulasans but only one of them is inside.  The one inside looks different than the other two and my other pulasan's.  The leaves almost have a purple-ish undertone to them plus it is the most vigorous.  Assuming they live, when it warms up I can send you one of the outside ones.  The price for the inside one........how much is a plane ticket back to PR?

I had four of the Juan pulasan seedlings.  I gave one to Warren.  I hope his is still alive and kicking.  All three of the remaining plants died a slow and inglorious death at the hands of cold weather.  :'(

None of my seed grown pulasans survived either.  However, the 3 nice seedlings from Juan I brought back are doing fine...as are the two durian.

Thanks again guys.

Durian, mangosteen and achachairu plantation, Jay, you are going to need a much bigger GH.

Noel, some of the seedlings are sugar apples and rollinias that came from your stock.

LL, if you want one of those precious, rare, one of a kind Juan's pulasan, it is going to cost you......shipping.  I have some other fun things you might want, let me figure out how to send you a message.

Thanks NewGen,
I have a passionfruit vine growing on the arbor above the GH and fruits are just starting to drop and roll off.  Kind of caught me by surprise the other day.

Ethan - Excellent job on the GH!  I agree with Jay that it looks like some sort of nativity scene.
Noel - Sheehan just hurt his back looking at the jak you are carrying.  He'd better hope Bryan doesn't have one that big next time!
Harry - Sorry.

Welcome to this new forum! I see everything is nicely and tugged away for the winter. Boy, your collection is getting way up there in the Jacob range! Talking about Jacob, has anyone informed Jacob of our exodus of GW? I'm going to drop him an email later tonight.

Are those passion fruits ripe? I have a bunch on my vine, but they're all green.

The annonas are doing great, some of them were blooming on and off all last summer.  I even tried to pollinate one bloom w/cherimoya pollen, thankfully it didn't set.

The first few that have fallen off so far are greenish with purple undertones, put them on the counter for a few days and they color up.  The summer ripened fruits are much better tasting IMO.  As far as having dibs, you dont even have to wait for the weather to warm. ;D
