Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lemon Zest
« on: May 24, 2020, 08:23:24 PM »
This is lemon zest next to two pickerings. From an early bloom and fell during our morning thunder storm.

All of mine have a pointy bump at the beak but only a few have 2 bumps. I do think this a lemon zest. I also added a photo of the tree shape.

It was tagged lemon zest, I wouldn’t know the difference since I’ve never had a lemon meringue. Is my coconut cream a coconut cream or a pina colada........?? I will put up a few more pictures to get more opinions. But I did loose my crop 2 out of 2 years due to arathnose or what ever you call it despite being babied will foil at sprays and other stuff.

They start to get a yellow spot on top. But most noticeably they will start to yellow a little then turn an orange tint. Looks totally different than the other mangos on the tree.

Best year yet, no disease, high yield and concentrated flavor! It’s been dry here in central Florida and that has made these mangos extremely tasty!! Only problem is I can only eat so many a day since they are sweet, and they are ripening all at once. Still have several dozen left on the tree.
Just bragging since I have had only one decent year in the 5 years I have had this tree. Figure I won’t be this lucky for many years ahead.

Thanks, I did read those articles. They spurred me to ask the questions. Wish I could find some detail on  small scale use and opinions if safe long term.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / naphthalene acetic acid on mango trees
« on: January 15, 2020, 06:21:12 PM »
I found some info on this acid significantly decreasing fruit yields by decreasing fruit drop and works on mango trees. I can’t find info on how much, when and how frequently to use during flowering. Does anyone have info on this? I looked on amazon and they sell all different types with different concentrations of vinegar. I am interested in trying this on a lemon zest mango tree to see if it improves yield.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My Sweet Tart is pushing new leaves!?

My coconut cream has also pushed new flushes of leaves and within 50’ of it my LZ is pushing flowers. I’m a lot happier with the new flushes of leaves than early flowers. Will likely have a lot better success rate on fruit with flowers 6-8 weeks from now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help please. LZ flowering way early
« on: December 22, 2019, 11:07:43 AM »
I live in east coast of central Florida and my lemon zest mango is flowering now. Last year it flowered in late January and the flowers died due to that fungus they are suspital to because it was wet and cold. I heard you can cut back the flowers and they will regrow? If true what is the proper method? Do I cut off the whole panical or just the flowers on the panicals?
Didn’t get any mangos off this tree last year but the ones I got in 2017 were amazing. I really want a crop this year!!!

Been fighting them on my guava for 2 years now and can’t seem to win. Have a sugar apple about 40 feet away and no signs of them, nor on any of my other 20 fruit trees.

Live in Brevard near the coast and glad to report only a loss of a few Barbados cherries, not a single orange, sugar apple or guava fell off (only fruit on trees now) nor a single branch, I was worried about the possible last new flushes just now pushing out I was getting on my mangos, advacados ect being damaged just before they go dormant in a month or2.😃😃😃😃😃

1) orange drink gallons a week
2) lemons/limes  same as oranges can’t live with out lemonade and cook with both fruit regularly
3) avacado. No one passes up a fresh guacamole
4) strawberries eat alone, in salads and in drinks or smoothies
5) watermelon  who walks past a watermelon tray without taking a piece

I live in Florida and all above are readily available and cheap. Now that I have cc and LZ mangos, mulberry and sugar apples among several other very good fruit trees that are great and would be preferred on a single day of choice, I would not move the more rarer type fruit up because I truly would not like to consume them daily as a year round staple. My top 5 I would not to like to live with out.

If the Obama administration allowed this it wouldn’t even be news..... that was clear when the video started and I could on see the words Trump. Points are made a lot easier if it is not tied to politics.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nani dai vs lessors Thai sugar apple
« on: August 10, 2019, 11:33:37 AM »
Looking for a little help. I have a lessard Thai sugar apple tree and is quite nice, my local Walmart is selling Na dai sugar apple trees. I can’t find any description of the na dai on line. Only that is a type of sugar apple. Is it the same as the lessard Thai? If not what are the differences.

What I mean by I can’t do permaculture in my neighborhood is that it doesn’t look pleasing to the untrained eye and my city and neighborhood would not allow it. All my trees in the front have bricked landscaping, can get away with a little more in the back yard. And here is a few photos of the pests. I have tried a goo substance to stop ants from working with the aphids but that hasn’t seemed to help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / To many sugar apples
« on: July 21, 2019, 06:14:32 PM »
Only my 2nd year getting sugar apples, hand pollinated some last  year and got about 6. Didn’t hand pollinate any this year and have several short branches with 5 or 6 or more on them. Some look smaller. Do I need to thin out my sugar apple tree? Never heard that before?

Thanks for this info! I live on the other side of the river in Rockledge and did buy a joey from them as well also a Day avacado. I have read nothing but horrible things about the Joey until you gave this info and was ready to look for grafts or put it up. It was damaged from the same hurricane and only grows on the south side of the tree yet is very healthy. Yet to get fruit since I cut the flowers off this year to let it mature more. Expect to have plenty of next year and hope they are good!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / LZ mango pest co trol
« on: July 18, 2019, 10:40:42 PM »
I have over 20 fruit trees and the only one with a problem is my LZ mango, has aphids like crazy that I can’t control and many other things. Lost my whole crop to anthracnose and a hail storm. I grow all trees organically except my citrus that I fertilize organically but I give them Bayer citrus systemic treatments. My city checks on them regularly and will uproot them at first site of issues. Is it ok to use this systemic poison on a mango tree? Those mangos are so good I want this tree to work out.The trees are well cared for, heavily organically fertalized, foliage sprays and bugs or leaves picked at first sign of issues. This tree has so many issues I can’t keep up. I can’t do permaculture do to my neighborhood. If any other suggestions please let me know.

I just got into this a few years ago, I have 20 trees now and it is a lot of work. Many needing different fertalizer sand pruning and watering or not watering at different time it’s tough. I asked my self why I didn’t start earlier. I know I could not of done it right when I had young kids and was younger. It would to to hard to focus on that when having the younger lifestyle with family, friends and sports being what is more important to. E when younger. Wish my trees were more mature but glad I waited!!

Ed, if a LZ you probably don’t need to protect it. Both the coconut cream and LZ I have hadn’t hand any interest from the birds or furry pest. I have plent around here and they do t touch them for some reason! Thanks God!

Nice collection! Are you going to plant them or try to container grow them?
