Sweet tart mango
« on: May 24, 2018, 11:53:51 AM »
So I planted a 3 gallon sweet tart last August. I tip pruned it to 4 scaffold branches about a foot long each. About a month later it had about 3 or 4 swollen buds on each branch. Since then it has done absolutely nothing. I was about to plant another one since I thought it was a dud. I just went to look at it and its putting on a massive growth flush. It looks amazing. I learned to never give up. I love this hobby.

Yeah keep tipping. Mine is 6 years old responded great to dedicated tip pruning so that it is more bushy and not a vigorous grower that others say their ST is. Or maybe mine just naturally had bushy tendencies.

I neglected tip pruning on some mango trees but not on my sweet tart. I kept on top of that one.

Approximately. Its good if there are a few leaves together facing outwards and cutting just above a leaf facing away from the center of the tree. I also either remove the central leader if there is one or lake a heading cut about two and a half feet off the ground. This will make height control and size control very easy.

Tip pruning is done at different lengths depending on the distance between nodes. This node distance varies from mango variety to mango variety. I think so called vigorous growers have longer node distances.
Someone can explain it better than me, who does a more exacting and better job of tip pruning.

For example -- Tip pruning is done to encourage bifurcation. But often when I tip prune a small branch it will grow back with no bifurcation. So it has to be tip pruned again in a few months, and often this time it does bifurcate.

Here is a photo of mine after/during a massive flush. I had maybe about 30 or 40 old leaves turn yellow and fall off sporadically lately and I’m not sure why. But obviously it is quite healthy to flush the way it has.

Nice looking tree man. Mine dropped a good amount of leaves that had bacterial black spot during the growth flush. They went fully yellow before dropping.

If you say so you are probably right.

But the tip pruning video of Dr Campell you posted is only 20% helpful. I saw that one five years ago and always thought it was too breezy and of limited use. He needs to do tip pruning on a larger, more mature mango tree and talk about how long the branch is when it is tip pruned and other indications when tip pruning should be done.

IOW he needs a do over on that video. Maybe someone here who knows him can make this request. Or you can make this t-pruning video.

It's typical for older leaves to yellow and fall off.

Thanks Jeff. I feel like now that I actually pay special attention to my trees I tend to be over critical at times. Good to know

My ST planted as a 15 Gal I Only Plant large trees wanted fast results .
My St did great held fruit well didn’t drop a bunch of fruit like my Pickering .

The leaves where clean all year long , the only issue I had was I spotted some branches that split , after posting pics the majority say that was due to cold weather and expansion of the bark .

I also didn’t fertilize any of my trees with chemical fertilizers.

It did not affect the fruit production, it fruits in bunches .

Will report on the taste once they ripen .

Thanks Ed
