Common names are variable but scientific names are a little better.
Check Spondias dulcis and Spondias mombin.

Check Spondias dulcis and Spondias mombin.

I’ve also heard people refer to the superior Spondias purpurea as hog plum.

I hate to have to say this, but Google would have answered your question very quickly.

Here’s a tip. Search each individually and read Wikipedia or some other reference on each fruit. There are separate Wikipedia pages for all thee species.

I haven’t had a June plum, but had my first hog plum the other day. Large seed, not a ton of fruit, but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was very good.

Mombin trees if large make a lot of fruit, it is hard to eat it all and much can go to waste. It does easily make a good wine, I used whole fruit.

I have tasted both and they are very different.

I tasted a lone hog plum from my tree about a week ago first fruit and then tasted several shared by achetadomestica.  I realized this is the same fruit called Iyeye in southern Nigeria.
The hog plum is a small fruit with a relatively large seed and thin layer of sweet pulp around the seed.  There was some tartness to the taste that I did not recall from the fruit growing up (hope others can chime in).  I like the fruit I tasted this year, perhaps has to do with the trip down memory lane.

The june plum on the other hand is a larger fruit with a completely different texture.  taken green is crunchy.  Has a large seed with spines that stick out of the seed.  I like the taste which is not quite so sweet.  You can let it ripen and it gets a touch softer but cant be described as a pulp.  When ripe, the meat is sweater.  I enjoy it both green and ripe.

Thank you. As I said I have a hog plum. I might have to get a June plum now. Which do you like better?

Your hog plum description is spot on.

There is some variability in mombin. In El Salvador they are called Jocote & a preferred variety is "de corona', with a crown structure on the distal(lower) end, and a larger size than most.

My neighbor has one I would name "de pez", with a nipple on the end, and also much larger size than normal.
they are all vegetatively propagated from branch cuttings and so would be true to type when planted.

This is why common names are no good. I know yet another fruit called hog plum in a different country and not any sort of spondias. Only by using the correct botanical names or at least a name most agreed upon can we find common ground. How about Mombin and Ambarella?

Youtube is growing very fast, 300 hours are uploaded every minute. You have to be skeptical of what you find there just like anywhere else on the internet. Be especially careful of machine generated voiceovers, they can be giveaways of someone who makes "junk videos" of no value or accuracy whatsoever, it is getting very bad lately.
