Annona Fruit Identification
« on: July 20, 2019, 09:04:11 PM »
Hello everyone! I need your help in identifying this annona I bought at the farmers market. It was labeled under 'Chirimoya'.

I asked the vendor and he said it was local from South Florida. I was under the impression from reading the forum that Chirimoyas don't grow in South Florida. See pictures of the fruit below. Let me know what you think it is!  ;D

It does resemble the Pond Apple, but i see some differences in the fruit I have. Mainly in the skin texture?

Could be, the pictures online do have a closer resemblance to the fruit I have. Whats throwing me off is the little spikes on most pictures, mines has smooth skin. Maybe removed for shipping?

I think so, or the spikes were all broken when the fruit was in transit.

Update: Fruit fully ripen today and I was able to confirm that its an Annona Montana, aka Mountain Soursop.

Taste is not the best, but I am making the best of the fruit in two ways. One is for a 'smoothie' like drink, and second i'll be using the seeds to grow as root stock for other compatible annonas.

Willing to experiment a bit with this one, ultimately want to graft some cherimoya varieties to see if I can get some fruits in South Florida.
