Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Great little hand sprayer
« on: February 02, 2015, 12:22:33 PM »
I began labeling all my sprayers (Pesticides ONLY, roundup ONLY, kelp ONLY) after someone I know had several hundred young trees sprayed by roundup instead of seven (a mistake of grabbing the wrong sprayer) ....

An article with some pictures
http://www.israelagri.com/?CategoryID=496&ArticleID=1045
Omg that Flamingo looks awesome! Any word on when we can get our hands on any of these varieties?

I'm growing a few pomelos in my yard already: Chandler, Tahitian, and valentine. Would love to add more in my yard.

The flamingo picture seems a bit deceptive. They have two different thickness skins in the image. I would much rather have the fruit to the right, than the pomello-like one to the left.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Low bearing coconuts
« on: January 27, 2015, 03:31:10 PM »
This is a colorful fellow from my island.

This is another passion of mine.... coconuts, especially Samoans....

Particularly got a laugh from the verbiage @ 2:20-3:00, but there is some serious info as well, interlaced with Kupuna stories. I respect his passion for the low bearing cocos.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Cocktail grapefruit pick time
« on: January 24, 2015, 01:24:54 AM »
I don't have an answer. I saw a cocktail grapefruit tree this last week, and started looking for multiple grafts (figuring it received its name as a multigraft of many varieties....).... Disappointingly I didn't buy it.

357
This is exciting.

I am a huge fan of grapefruit. Are these varieties being propagated throughout Israel?

Been making orange juice last month. Lately throwing a scoop of vanilla ice cream in there..... mmmm sooo good. Have to hide it from the kids.

I have a bosworth #3, the tree is a graft, bought about 4' tall and it grew a foot in 3 years. I had been hand watering until a couple years ago.  Then a couple years ago it was placed on an emitter. It has a spigot near it (4' away) that the brass handle blew off and leaked, probably leaked for a day or more. After the leak the lychee put on significant growth.  I have a theory that they like deep watering more than shallow watering. Time to test this theory out with the others....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Oro Negro vs. Monroe Avocado
« on: January 06, 2015, 08:18:34 PM »
Monroe maybe you can keep at 15-18 ft. Oro Negro for me once is 2-4 years old will be hard to keep that small. Heavy pruning may produce a every other year.
In some ways I am anxious to see that much growth on my avos, but at the same time I know pruning will be a lot of work.  It will probably be like kids, "remember when they were so small and easy to take care of".

Any recommendation on a brand or mixture?

I have been using kelp extract from my local home improvement store. The bottle has directions for dilution, for me its 2tbsp / gallon. Give them a nice spray at dusk. I saw some people doing it once a month. Been doing it for 2 months, and all the trees love it.

Anyone have some lemonade seeds? I would like to try growing this one.

You can try to give the orange a little boost with a foliar spray.

Does HD sell seedling mangos? How much is one?

What I am about to say is all here say, with no experiments to back it up.... I should probably try something out in a more scientific way.

A friend (co-farmer) says he uses leftover drywall... then I talked to someone at our local BEI and said that form of calcium is much harder to use (not sure if they meant absorption into the plant or just as a soil amendment), but if you had it lying around, sure go for it.

I probably hauled about 5 pickups of drywall to the dump in the last 18months before I heard this... :-\

$15 a pot?!?!
Wow. Too rich for my blood. If you have to buy a a few hundred pots....

Just for curiosity, I would love to see Carlos do a side by side comparison on this one since he compared the other felt mesh like pot ;).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best 1/2 head for irrigation?
« on: November 20, 2014, 06:13:42 PM »

Also I did some research, but couln't find the DIG head, do you have a link?

This is it http://www.digcorp.com/irrigation-homeowner/micro-sprinklers-micro-sprayers-jets
They have them at big box stores around the US.

But then again, you might have to make an adapter to these little 1/4 heads, and by the time you factor in the adapter and the head, you are pobably at $4.

Best bet might be to grab a handful of those $6 ones and try them out for 3 months and then switch them all over. Sometimes its best to try things slowly.

I assume you are running 20+PSI in the PVC lines (or whatever the water company provides).

You can switch to DIG spray nozzles but you would have to put a pressure regulator. You can put one single one in line with your whole system, its a big valve available at a plumbing store. The other alternative is to put on on every emitter.... but that adds a buck to every nozzle. Some people I know run two 180 degree emitters to avoid soaking the trunk.

I use the little 180, 360 heads. They are 2 bucks a pop (non-bulk Hawaii price), and reach a 3' radius (although I believe the product label touts a much larger radius).

On the other hand, $6 a head doesn't seem too bad when you just say its $300 for 50 trees.  Considering all that work you put into trenching and buying materials....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Starfruit tree near house
« on: November 19, 2014, 01:12:13 AM »
I have a B10 Starfruit tree. If they are prolific as I have seen, is it a good idea to be near the house?

Near the house I can see being good for the continual harvest, but bad if its constantly shedding fruit on the ground that rots.

What is the general opinion?

Any other trees that are a bad idea to be near a house or walkway/driveway?

This year I removed:

Okrung Tong--lacked the balance of sweet/tart that I like--boring
NDM#4--similar lack of tart--just too sweet (like sapodilla)
Neelam--Decided to trade it due to space contraints
Rosigold--didn't like the fruit--YRB category (yellow, rubbery, and bland)
Graham--Is this even a mango?  I would grow 1 tree if I had a lot of acreage because it's interesting, but no thanks with limited space
Fairchild--good, but didn't make my favorite
Florigon--Didn't think it was very tasty
Ice Cream--Saw a mature tree this summer (near the ocean) with mostly black fruit--no thanks!

All were small trees, and seemed like good ideas, but upon tasting, just didn't make the cut.  For newbies out there, it is SO important to sample the fruit before you grow it (if possible). I also have a Madame francis that is a mature tree, and I intend to topwork it rather than cut it down.

Aw man. I planted 2 florigons and 1 graham last week.....

Other than those, I have a 2 year old Rapozo that is just stagnant at 1 1/2 tall.... I am going to try some foliar sprays and top dressing the soil and see if I can get him a little boost. Any other ideas?

Citrus General Discussion / Help identifying citrus problem
« on: November 07, 2014, 03:58:01 PM »
I have this die off on several of my citrus trees. I cannot see anything except ants. The first thing that happens is the branch looses its leaves then the branch dies. The other branches are still alive.

This particular one is a clementine mandarine

I need some hints!

Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: remove banana flowers or not?
« on: November 06, 2014, 11:49:29 AM »
In SE Asia, namely Thailand/Cambodia/Laos, removing banana flowers right after the last hand is formed served one important purpose, food. It is used as salad in a number of dishes. Chopped up into small strings, they are quite delicious.

I have been meaning to look up a recipe. Seems like another good food source. Here at the farmers market there are a few people selling them. So that means that people are buying them.

Worth a try.

For now, I cut and break up the flower and use it for fertilization.
