About arazá-açú / arazá da areia, psidium robustum
« on: March 11, 2018, 10:59:38 AM »
Hi, I received this plant from a collectionist 4 years ago labeled as psidium guyanense.

august 2014:

january 2016:

2017

It grew up fast in a pot with no problems, then I planted it in a hot and sunny place at my garden and it fruited for the first time the last year, 24 march 2017

1.6m tall

http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=23200.msg277951#msg277951

But it had only one fruit, it was green and with 2 fruit fly worms (not properly ripe). Anyway it was tasty, 12ş Brix.

march 2018

I dont have a refractometer now, but its sweetness is better now, I suppose something like 16ş Brix or so.

The size is really big for an "arazá" that is a sister of the strawberry guava

It was very difficult to get it properly ripe here because of the fruit fly worms (and maybe because of our cold nights? 13ş C), but I got some good fruits, as for instance this one:

As you can see, the bigger fruits are yet to come and I love this species: it tastes very complex, like a mix of pineaple, pear, apple, guava, strawberry guava, banana, plum and so on (I gave it to taste to some friends and family and they got all those flavours of different fruits, I agree) if properly ripe. If not properly ripe, it can taste to tomato or some vegetable, and it smells like an unripe banana.

When ripe It smells like it tastes. The perfume is not like a guava, nor like strawberry guava, it is not strong but I love it. Some parts of the skin are tart and some are sweet.

On an overall eating quality scale, how would you rate it relative to other psidium species?

Well, very subjetive topic, I can say what psidiums I liked it more, like this:

1 white tailand guava from Formosa, Argentina
2 psidium australe
2 strawberry guava, arazá açú (p robustum), lemon guava, arazá negro (p. myrtoides), angola guava
4 yellow/pink guava from Paraguay
5 pisidum guineense (I yet to have some properly ripe fruit of this one!)

Keep in mind I really like the yellow/pink guava from Paraguay, but I like more the other ones.

Hmm, I'm rather confused by your list.   You liked it more than the things on the list, or you liked the things on the list more than it?  Or is that a general ranking?  Because I see P. robustum in the list.  Is 1 best and 5 worst, or 5 best and 1 worst?

(Thanks for the subjective analysis, though!  :)  )

1 was the best for me, and 5 was the worst.

i tasted psidium longipetiolatum today (very nice "citrus" taste), I will remake this list

1 white tailand guava from Formosa, Argentina
2 psidium australe
3 arazá serrano (psidium longipetiolatum), arazá açú (p. robustum)
4 strawberry guava, lemon guava, arazá negro (p. myrtoides), angola guava
5 yellow/pink guava from Paraguay
6 pisidum guineense (I yet to have some properly ripe fruit of this one!)

Keep in mind I really like the yellow/pink guava from Paraguay, but I like more the other ones.

p. robustum has a very personal and complex flavour, I will put it in the same level of a good pear or a good feijoa.

I am harvesting very nice fruits; the next year I will do juices, icecreams and mermelades from them, its acidity helps a lot for that!

Also today I tasted a super ripe psidium guianensis or guineense and it was so good: strawberry mermelade smell, rich taste, acid and sweet, much better than when harvested from the tree, you must wait till it fall and then wait 2 more days to get yellow and softer, just like you do with feijoas.

Today I ate a perfectly ripe winter harvested arazá grande and it was better than the ones from the summer (no fruit fly damaged); pineapple taste!
