I enjoy being outside working in my garden and with my plants... but being very fair skinned... I don't need the sunlight exposure.
I decided a long time ago I would eschew fashion for protection.
I wear this hat to protect my face, ears, scalp and neck:

3CERAŽ Outdoor 360 UV protection Sun block hat Folding visor fishing Nylon Cap hiking (milk)

Around $7 on Amazon and worth it!

I also wear long sleeves, long pants, sunglasses and gloves.
This also prevents mosquito bites, blisters and nuisance scratches.

Wise move. I had 2 Squamous Cell Carcinomas removed from my arm this summer.

I understand... I had one removed from the back of my hand a few years ago.
Minor yes.. But I still don't wish to repeat that procedure.

Yeah, I've always been a sunscreen kinda guy - conscious of the exposure, and i am somewhat fair-skinned too.

but a few years ago i decided to take it up a notch and wear long-sleeves in the summer whenever possible.

I was gifted a Tilley hat, which has a wide brim. I usually turn my shirt collar up to cover my neck, or use sunscreen. I need to get in a better habit of protecting my hands (especially when driving) since they tend to take the brunt.

I would rather look stupid or be a little less comfortable than go the cancer route.

on a side note, I also SWEAR by using permethrin on my pants. I used to be eaten alive every summer by chiggers but the permethrin completely eliminates that issue. It's mind boggling.

Yeah, my hubby can work outside all day and not have a problem.
I burn if I look at pictures of the beach in a magazine!
Guess it's my pasty-white Northern European heritage...

I don't think I could stand loss of peripheral vision with side flaps. I use a wide brimmed cloth safari hat but with neck flap. I do also use a T-shirt head wrap to absorb sweat.

I've also made a substantial investment in Hanes LS Beefy-Ts.
100% cotton and durable.
