Sweet or acid-less lemons
« on: March 29, 2022, 07:11:06 AM »
I am looking for the best acid-less lemons available but with the typical lemony flavor of the rind.

I'm not a fan of sweet lemon/lime and so I haven't tried many, but you could check out this thread:  https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=40084.0

I haventt tried them but lemonade lemons and sanbokan might bee good choices.

The actual "sweet"/acidless limes I did were horrifying to my taste buds personally. Like pinesol mixed with some salty artificially sweetener.

Last week for the first time I bought a sweet lemon.  The juice tasted like sugar water.  The zest was tastless.   Maybe some are better.  But I have no more interest in them,

There are citron cultivars that are both sweet and have substantial amounts of pulp - I think the 'citron of commerce' is the classic example.  It's even less cold-tolerant than most lemons, though.  Supposedly the presence of red compounds in the petals and sometimes on early stages of the peel are the markers for acid in citrons, and sweet citrons lack that pigment.

Sanbokan is good, fruits are large, has some seeds, taste is mild, not much sour lemon at all.
I eat it like an orange, has a different taste than any lemon I have eaten.
