Mislabeled Pluot?
« on: May 27, 2020, 07:49:39 PM »
In one of my first years as a CRFG member I picked up a grafted tree from the opportunity table. It was labeled as Flavor King and it was grafted on apricot seedling.

I've only ever seen apricot style leaves above the graft.

I recently visited another member, and their Flavor King has Plum-like leaves.

It blooms exactly in time with Flavor Grenade.

Is it mislabeled?

If it weren't for the bloom corresponding with Flavor Grenade, I would be thinking it was Flavor Delight.

Here in Romania ( the biggest plum producer in the world) the Pluots, plumcots ,etc  would be considered mislabeled because they are not real plum ( Prunus Domestica) hibrids .
They are american plum hibrids wich we dont even consider those plums and we call them ,,corcoduse,,( mirabelle fruit) not ,,prune,,( real plum,Prunus Domestica).
None of the pluots, plumcots have real plum genes in them.

EDIT: they are not even Myrabelle ( Prunus domestica var Syriaca) hybrids with apricot but instead they are hybrids made with Prunus Cerasifera ( myrobolan used as rootstock)  or Prunus Salicina ( a chinese ,,plum,, thats a soird of a chinese Myrobolan) and apricot.

I dont even know how you can say they have plum style leaves since they have no plum genes.
In order to get an idea on how the ,,plum,, style leaves should look on these hibrids, you should compare them with the Myrobolan leaves or the chinese plum/myrobolan.

All pluots of my 4-n-1 tree have plum leaves. I don’t have flavor king though

Seeming more like an apricot or aprium now.
Maybe Flavor Giant. I guess I will find out soon, it's holding fruit.
