Theres 3 or 4 orders still waiting to go out.  I wait for fruit to fall and then pack boxes and ship in order.  I will get an order out Monday and then again by Thursday and maybe another Saturday or Monday.

Please be patient, order will all get filled very soon, I have hundreds and hundreds of these.  They will be available for several months.

Are these the "Red Rover" variety?
They look great!
BTW...The cuttings I got from you are doing great. High percentage of them rooted.
Thank you!

Kevin

I have fredricks and red rover.  Both are dropping now.  The picture is a fredrick but they are very similar fruit.

Thats great your cuttings took Kevin.  You must have a good environment for such fast results.

Fredricks on left and red rover on right.  The fredricks are egg shape and red rovers are spherical.  Taste is very similar its hard to tell the difference without trying seceral side by side.  Ive eaten a bunch of fredricks this week and they are very good, low acid and juicy.

I order off an on, between ripenings of my assorted passiflora. Eat em daily when possible.

As good as any I've found.

Matt and Adam, your boxes are out.  I should be caught up with the rest of the orders this week.

Another box went out today and another going tomorrow.  All the orders should be out in a few days.

I wanted to show you guys what the fruit look like when I ship.  I try and get them out asap so they still are smooth when you get them.  Because in summer heat they turn purple and wrinkle up fast.  They actually taste better at this stage but dont look as nice.  Im teying to get them to you in a early state.

Man I have not been on here in a while - Brad, do a lot of your passionfruits fall off green and turn red afterwords? Mine are dropping like mad right now but leave them on the counter for a couple days and they are perfect.

Yeah they fall off partially green and are perfect after a few days on the counter.

Will they get ripe outside the fridge if you pick them green? I actually have one vine, which does not produce enough for our family, but a fruit thief keeps getting any fruit once it turns a little purplish. I am thinking to just pick them all green.

No, they are no good if picked early.  You really need to let them hang until they fall off or fall off with a very slight tug.

I have more passionfruits and orders are caught up.  Let me know if anyone wants more.  Otherwise I have no idea what to do with all these fruits.

Be the passion fruit guy at 1 farmers market a week.
Trade for all the other good farmers market offerings with your passion fruits.
I am getting to be self sufficient with these or I would probably be buying a box a week while you have them.

I will ask the booths at the market this weekend, good idea.

Im also open to trades for fruit or plant material if anyone has anything.

Thanks for these beautiful fruit. I am going to let them get a bit wrinkle before I eat them, they are almost too beautiful to cut into them. :)
How many vines do you have? My vine only produced about 8 this year (second year in the ground) I let them wrinkle so much before I ate them that I thought them may be rotten, but they were perfect inside. I hope next year I will get more, but mine only get a little purple not as beautiful as yours. Thanks again!

Ive got 8 vines but many of them are young plants and not producing.  Some are experimental types from seed or from vines that are not common in california.  The 2 vines that I am selling fruit from are red rover and fredrick and they each make hundreds of fruits 2X per year.

I dont have plants but can send cuttings.  Its not that hard to root if you have the right conditions.  You probably only need 1 vine though, these things will easily cover 50-100ft of 6ft tall fence if you feed and water it.

I sent a bunch of boxes of fruit out today.  A few of them went to florida.  If you guys have problems because of the hurricane contact me and I will resend you a box.

Theres still tons of fruit if people want boxes let me know, its raining passionfruit here.  Probably for another week or 2.  The plants have dropped enough now they are doing another mega bloom and there will be more fruit again in winter.

Great, hopefully they werent overly ripe.  If anyones boxes were too ripe just send me a pic and I will work it out and send a better box.  The long holiday weekend delayed shipping and the weather in FL sounds like it was an extra day also.

Thank you guys so much for all the passionfruit orders.  I shipped around 100lbs in the last couple weeks.  And theres more going out.

Brad, these would never be overripe. more wrinkly the skin gets, more intense flavor gets.
Title: Re: Passionfruits
Post by: spaugh on September 06, 2019, 06:49:00 PM
A couple extra days is not bad but after a few weeks they do go bad.  The acid breaks down and the flavor goes sideways then the shell starts to rot and the seed sacks break down into more of a goo than they already are.

Sure, I can send you a box.

They are starting to slow down but theres still a lot on there.  The plants are blooming hard again and there will be a big harvest again during winter.

They drop yellow/purple or full purple.  If they are green and falling maybe the plant needs more water or some other issue.

my kids shoot them out the battery powered leaf blower at each other; so proud

they are really good. about 8 from the last batch were really old and wrinkly. thought they would be bad. were actually excellent and flavors held up well with aging

Hi Brad,

Tempted to order some of your fruit but too many unexpected expenses this month to afford that.

However, as a side note to your passiflora fruit haul, could you perhaps recommend a decent book about passiflora culture in the subtropics.

I have the 1981 edition of the Vanderplank (Passion Flowers) book but not either of the two newer revisions, and don't know whether either of those newer editions are especially worth having.

But, I'd also like anything else on gardening with Passifloras in Florida, California, etc. Such a culture book would be useful because I know that some of the Passiflora species don't tolerate the heat we get in west central Florida.

TIA

Paul M.

Sorry, I don't own a single gardening book.  These purple passionfruit are well acclimated to southern CA and take no effort to grow.  I have one on a timer and never did anything for it, it made at least 500 fruit in just about a year in the ground.  Its so prolific its roots have gone 10ft over to an avocado tree and choked it out and the tree is dieing.  Once the harvest is done, I'll be removing that vine as its getting too large and encroaching on other trees.

OK Brad, thanx for the comments. Years ago I had a P. edulis fma. flavicarpa here in Tampa which was in a 5-gal bail bucket.  But it escaped and rooted through the drainage holes of the bucket plus the vine climbed up into our 30-ft tall 'Duncan' grapefruit tree.  I got quite a number of fruit off that vine but it near killed the 'Duncan'!

Had to cut the vine off and dig up its roots.  The dead, dried-up vine with its leaves persisted for another year covering the canopy of the 'Duncan' but the tree managed to survive although we had no grapefruits on it for another whole year.

This time 'round I think that I've learned my lesson with passifloras and so have trained the two passiflora species that I now am growing onto my chainlnk fencing.  No tree canopies to invade and lots easier pollinating access, if that's needed.
