Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado ID
« on: August 08, 2013, 09:06:59 PM »
I picked this up at a local store. There was a box of huge avocados, which a couple of weeks ago had Hass size 6-8oz green Florida Avocados.

These were considerably bigger, with the same label, "Florida Avocado".  The only information I could get from the store owner was that they were from florida. (No idea on the source or cultivar or Maybe he didn't want to give away his secret source)

I did a bit of detective work, and I think they are Lula, but would love to hear from you guys and see if anyone can help with the ID.

Here's what I have so far
It's a nice green large avocado, Some pear shaped, some just large oval, like Choquette, doni or dupuis, lula, monroe, miguel??

I think I should have cut into it a day or two earlier...it had a bit of black spotting on the skin and inside that I cut away.

Large seed...Lula?? The thin papery seed coat easily just came away unlike Hass seed coat.

The skin was not as thick as Hass, and it was easy to peel, but was a bit thicker than the Mexican varieties that are paper thin and edible.

Taste - It was creamy, but bland. I am not sure if was just bland cuz it was a store or if that's how it tastes. There were no fibers.

Choquette is commercially sold but I ruled it out as its seed looked smaller. It could be doni, dupuis, monroe. I was hoping it was a Catalina, but I am sure they won't be selling those out here in TX, and the seed of the Catalina is longer.

Would love to hear from you on what you think it is. If it's Lula, I may just use it to get a few rootstocks going!
Thanks in advance for your input..:)

Hi Everyone,

I've been potting a lot of plants and just recently came across these bugs. I'm not sure what they are...maybe larvae of some kind??? Gnats?

They are less that a millimeter, white and crawl/jump across the surface of the soil. I tried spraying them with Garden safe insecticide, it seemed to work, then I noticed they just crawled into the soil while sprayed and came back up later. I tried placing the pots in the TX sun, thinking they'd die, or fly off.. but nope they haven't budged. >:( I don't want to use anything stronger as I don't want to harm my newly sprouted seeds.

I used a new bag of Miracle  Grow potting soil, and my pots are new, so I'm lost to where they came from, or what I can do. Should I just discard all the soil and repot all my seeds and plants...
Any advice?

Thank you...

Avocados...all that guacamole!!... :P

Don't forget, Strawberries, Blueberries, peaches, nectarines and plums...Passion fruit, Dragon fruit, Jujubes...

My little tiger protecting the blueberries from the "bird" thieves.

Sitting around on a lazy afternoon, surrounded by the scent of jasmine,  biting into a juicy fruit...now what could be better!
Ohh and my favorite for last... waiting for those Annonas to ripen (at the end of summer)... A nice way to end things, don't you think?..:)

There's plenty of fruit in summer...

What screams Summer to you? What are you waiting on to ripen? What will make your tummy happy this summer?

Have a Happy Summer everyone, and Happy Fruiting!!    :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Storms headed east...
« on: April 10, 2013, 09:19:03 PM »
Spring's had a difficult time settling in this year... :( Weather's been erratic, with unusually warm, to cold/freezing, to gusty. My plants are just hanging in there... Already lost a few sapodillas and baby avos to gusty winds last time around...

The freezing cold wind last week wiped out tender leaves on the sugarapples (all turned black)... :-\

Yesterday's gusty winds took out my sapodillas... :'(... got to more than 83 today and then dropped within hours to 52...and with freezing rain..it's gonna get to 40s before it's over...

There's tornado warnings and damaging wind, especially for central/east USA... stay safe... I keep staring at my chicos.. buu huu..:(
