"selck" White Sapote
« on: June 04, 2020, 03:57:04 AM »
I have a small selck white sapote. The only info i have found is that it is one of the best tasting ones and genetically it is close to vernon and it should be self pollinating.  Does anyone have any more info, more specifically regarding the taste, fruit size and color?
Thanks

Felipe

Close to Vernon? I believe Vernon is C.edulis, Selck is C. tetrameria or at least a hybrid (it has wooly leaves).

My experience so far: Irregular bearer, rather shy producer, late season (Fall), fruit is yellow, taste is excellent, but perishable (more then other cultivars).

As far as I know it is self pollinating, like all other casimiroas, or am I wrong?  ???

Thank you very much for the info.
About beeing close to vernon i had found this paper on genetic diversity of casimiroa edulis varieties from Kagoshima Japan.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://journals.ashs.org/hortsci/downloadpdf/journals/hortsci/42/6/article-p1329.xml&ved=2ahUKEwijj9ba7OnpAhWTTxUIHfRZBnIQFjABegQIBxAK&usg=AOvVaw0G5VJpNcs0crsbAo2W14WG

And it gives information on pollen producing and genetic diversity of many white sapote varieties. In this paper it states that selck is closest to vernon.

Thank you for this excellent link about pollenator varieties of white sapote.  It's surprising that so many good varieties are pollen sterile.
