"Spencer" avocados.
« on: December 04, 2018, 03:54:09 PM »
Just tried them for the first time over the weekend. Taste is buttery, somewhat fragrant, extremely thin black skin, size on the small side. Anybody growing them?
Thanks,

Brad,
Sorry I didn't think to take photos. The size and shape is like that of the smaller Haas that are sold "8 for $1" along Highway 152 in Gilroy, CA. Exterior is completely shiny, black, even when unripe. Color stayed the same after ripening. Interior is lush green like Haas. I've never heard of "Spencer", but the seller told me that name. It was sold at a Farmer's Market, by the folks at Murray Family Farms in Bakersfield.

8 for $1 avocados?  I think I'd live on avocados!

Yeah, $8 avocados for a buck. I bought a bunch last summer. They're pretty small though. 2 weeks ago I drove through Gilroy, the signs were still there, but the booths weren't open yet at that time.

Depending on the size, you can find the runts very cheap, but you don't get a whole lot out of them. Much better to find sized up fruit that matured properly.

Why not send an E-mail to Steven if you are interested in the fruit? He is very good about responding. murraystevena2@gmail.com

I have met and am "friends" with Steven Murray on Facebook. I will send him a message and ask details on Spencer Avocado.

Steven said; "This is a variety that we grow on my farm. They are high oil and have edible skin. Good for guacamole or on bread."

Thanks ricshaw,

Didn't know the skin was edible. So this looks like a new cultivar. Google knows nothing about it, Lol.
