Red Jabos Suckering
« on: August 03, 2020, 07:36:24 PM »
Anyone else notice the large number of suckers/root sprouts that arise from the ground beneath Red Jabos?
I've successfully transplanted several so far.
Is this characteristic of all Jabos?
Thanks!

Not sure about so jabos, but my grimmal has a sucker growing off of an exposed root. I also had a sabara sucker 5 or 6 years ago but it never grew back after plucking it.

Hi Kevin,

are the suckers below a graft? or away from the trunk of the tree like a runner? Do you have pics ?  Curious mind wants to know

My Red Jabo mother plant is a non-grafted seedling.
It keeps sending up sprouts from the roots.
I've been digging them out and repotting them.

Yes, my red jaboticaba has lots of suckers. I have several suckers that are probably 2 feet tall on one of mine, but all the little ones I try to pick off. I try to cover the exposed roots so that they don't sucker but still end up having some. I haven't seen any of my other jaboticaba have suckers.

How are the suckers doing? I took a few off my red but seedlings seem to outperform my suckers very quickly. The suckers take a long time to establish away from the mother plant.
