Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: prune cherimoya
« on: September 14, 2021, 01:56:46 PM »
I'm not sure why it would be pruned after fruit set. If you wanted to get the fruits larger then you can reduce the amount of fruits (prune) on the branches. I don't maintain my larger trees much so I don't do anything except cut back tall branches and dig up the tree when it gets out of hand. I did help my neighbor with his fuyu persimmon tree last month by thinning his branches since he had too many fruits and it looked like branches will break from the weight of fruits. I ended up cutting the weeping branches and got rid of about 500 fruits (see the photo).

OMG, that is called unequal distribution of wealth! I've tried planting, and killed, 5 persimmon trees so far. They all thrived for about a year, then mysteriously became stunted, withered, and died.

I put together a GH from Harbor Freight, it was 10' wide, 12' long, and 10' tall. Took a bit of work all by myself. I had it for about 8 years, then the HOA finally noticed that it was visible over my front gate. I was forced to take it down. Now I'm looking for something that can be assembled and disassembled every year. I only need/want it up for about 2-3 months for the winter months. I've looked at the GH with tubular frames and clear plastic cover, and have used a few, they don't hold the heat well at all because there's no floor. They also get wind blown easily, even with tiedowns. The sturdier GH all seem to be the kind that you assemble and leave it place year round. Is there any that can be put together and taken apart relatively easy?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Strawberry guava not looking good.
« on: September 02, 2021, 03:35:49 PM »
Thanks for your responses.
The tree is in the ground. It gets a lot of sun exposure, and I suspect that it may be too much sun. Many days over 100 F. I have another tree like this, but in a more shaded location, and that one's all green and healthy looking.

Hi,
The fruits are turning black and the leaves don't look healthy either. Does it look like over watering to you guys?
Thanks.

Whatever fruits you get, I advise caution regarding anything from China.
I've been told by several people that Chinese lychees specifically get sprayed heavily with some obnoxious pesticides, and they tend to add colors to the skin to make them presentable. It's also been said that certain fruits from China were harvested way under-ripe and were conditioned  chemically to make them ripen.

Yes, these fruits were all hand pollinated.
Thanks.

Hi,

These are still very small, maybe an inch all around. Other fruits on the tree are still green and maturing.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What cultivar of "Thai" mango is this?
« on: July 06, 2021, 01:09:42 AM »
A friend bought a box and gave me some to try.
All he knows is they're called "Thai" mango at the store.
He said it's expensive, $33+ for a box of about 10 or so. Length is 6"-7".
Tastes sweet and crunchy, with a hint of tar, which I kinda like.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How do you minimize the squirrel problem?
« on: June 25, 2021, 04:56:46 PM »
I've accepted the fact that they cannot be prevented, but I'm just hoping to have some fruits for myself.
They've feasted on my plums, nectarines, and peaches. Now they're climbing the mango branches and knocked down unripe ones. I feel sad and angry seeing those would-be delicious mangoes on the ground. I've trapped some of them, and shot others (great fun to see them roll over, Lol). I've already ordered a few more traps, this seem to be the best way. Shooting requires me to be home all the time, I will lose my real job, haha. Is any type of poison food an option? Any advice is much appreciated

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What % shade cloth is recommended ?
« on: May 17, 2021, 11:50:28 PM »
I know different kinds of plants prefer different amount of sunlight.
In my case, all my annonas get burned badly in the summer.
Very dry and hot here in Bakersfield.
I'm planning on putting up some shade, just not sure what % I should get.

Thanks for any opinions,

Looks really nice, Brad.

They grow well here in Bakersfield as well, I have to fight off the birds and squirrels. It's a constant struggle.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Do I really have a "Prolific" paw paw?
« on: April 23, 2021, 12:45:02 PM »
Hi,

I ordered Susquehana and Prolific last year. Received them as bareroot twigs, actually, just twigs as they didn't have any roots to speak of.
Anyways, after a few months and they both sprouted, I'm pretty happy about it. Comparing the leaves of both, the Susquehana definitely looks like a paw paw. However, the leaves of the Prolific look different.
Thanks for your opinions,

Auto vents are $30 each, or $100 for all 4.
Thermostats are $35 each or $60 for both.
I live in Bakersfield, but go to OC and LA areas from time to time.
This weekend, I'll be going through LA, OC, and SD counties.
Can meet up somewhere along the way if anyone is interested.
Thanks,

Ok, cool.
I thought this area is only to buy/sell tropical fruits.
Will start a FS post separately.

Thanks,

I find it odd that a forum like this doesn't have a dedicated section to post items For Sale, or Wanted, that are related to our passion of growing tropical fruits.  I have several things from my greenhouse that will be useful to somebody. I don't want to post them yet, because it might violate some rules that I don't know about, Lol.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / How to get rid of these?
« on: August 17, 2020, 12:20:43 PM »
Hi,
My inground Fuji apple tree pretty much has every single leaf infected. The whole tree still looks healthy, several fruits on it at the moment.
What can be done?

Thank you,
