Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting: Female x Male plants
« on: July 31, 2017, 02:03:10 PM »
First, let me say Iīm not a botanicist, Iīm just a curious person and an enthusiast in the subject of fruit trees.
I've never encountered a dioecious species that had male and female grafts on the same plant. This intrigued me ... The cause is just the commercial interest? I guess not ... So I researched this subject, but I did not find any information about this anywhere.
Maybe it's a dumb question, but, is possible to graft male and female on the same plant? If not, why not?
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Questions about Santol
« on: November 16, 2016, 07:21:15 AM »
I got myself interested in this fruit tree, so, solved to do a few questions to the experts. :)
I read in some places it is monoic, in others that it is dioic... I need just one tree or at least two?
I also read the entire fruit can be eaten, seeds included. But some places says the seeds arenīt edible.
I know it is a BIG tree, but there are a few persons that says it can be kept and also that can produce fruits in containers, other say it isnīt possible.

What is your experience with this fruit tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Strange Pitangatuba...
« on: January 12, 2016, 03:24:09 PM »
I got these two strange fruits today.
They came from a tree that, till now, produced just normal elongated pitangatubas. About the enviroment, the difference is just to MUCH MORE rain than in the previous year.

The two strange fruits has a pulp without latex, crunchy, with good amount of juice and... no seed! But take a look at the abnormal skin...

Is it some sort of decease, or can be product of mutation or hybridization?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about Mamey
« on: September 25, 2015, 09:58:47 AM »
I have the common sapoti, grafted, in pots and already with fruits.
Now, Iīm tempted to buy an air-layered Mamey, but due to the fact it is a bigger tree, Iīm unsure if it can be kept in pots.
Somebody has experience with this fruit in pots? Opinions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cambucá and other trees
« on: April 26, 2015, 07:10:26 PM »
While visiting the Butantan Institute with my kids this weekend, I decided to look for an old tree of cambucá that had a gray trunk, which I had seen in 2014 (then, I found just one fruit on the ground).
To my surprise, I found three more trees of cambucá, being in total two with the grayish trunk and two with the reddish trunk. Better yet: the trees with redish trunk were fruiting!!

The trees with gray trunk are over 15 meters tall and the trunk is wider. The trees with red trunk are about 10 meters tall and far more slender trunk. I must say the fruits of the red var are smaller than the ones from the gray var. Here it goes the photos.  8)

Citrus General Discussion / Champgne orange with trouble...
« on: March 01, 2015, 07:07:10 PM »
Maybe somebody can help to identify what is happening and how to solve the problem.
Note the grayish color in two points of the trunk. There, exists a really tiny point where the sap flows to outside of the trunk. Any ideas?  :-[

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help me to identify it
« on: August 25, 2014, 07:58:35 PM »
In a small nursery near of my home, I found a curious (at least to me) tree. Asking the seller about her, the answer was "itīs a goiaba". But flowering from the trunk and with these leafs? Looks like a jaboticaba, I said. "No... itīs a goiaba", he insisted. Also, he put a cheaper price to the tree, which has 2,20 meters tall. So, I ended the conversation and bought the tree.
Iīm sure it isnīt a goiaba, but it has big leafs for a jaboticaba... Can you help me to identify it? Here it goes the photos. For comparison, the photo has leafs of the jaboticabas that i have.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Doubt about Ficus Auriculata
« on: August 12, 2014, 10:18:31 AM »
Hi!
Found a place with many of these trees growing freely. Asking about the fruit, a man said me they are edible. He told me that you can do juices and candies with good taste. I never heard about this... Since the tree is native from Asia, somebody from there can confirm if the fruits are edible and if it have a good taste (if so, recipes please)? How can I know when it is mature?

After the flower fall a small fruit appears inside the baloons and grows fast. Any idea what is it and if itīs edible by humans?
