If you had room for one passion fruit variety?
« on: October 15, 2020, 08:19:28 PM »
Well, what would it be and more importantly.  How do I get it?  I have a small beach lot so space is limited but I got room for maybe one or two containers next to a fence.  Any input on container size?

Plant a “Frederick “ in the ground for tasty fruit in Morro Bay climate.

If it was a cool area so the more glamorous flavicarpas are not an option then Supersweet 96A or Sweetheart would be my edulis of choice.

I would graft different varieties on a purple edulis. They graft easily.

Misty Gem is the standard A grade edulis here and it does taste good.

Morro Bay, your not to far up the coast from me go with 'Fredrick' will give you ton's of fruit. Miners or Home depot should have them.

I haven't seen Misty Gem or Sweetheart. Have they made it to the US?

Miner's nursery section in SLO seems to have suffered from the recent heat waves. Maybe AGs fared better.

if I suggested a flavicarpa you probably wou probably couldn't find it either. Passionfruit might be like atemoyas and lychees in that ones from other countries and new varieties take a while to land in the US.

I’ve got a Fredrick on the way.  I’ll definitely be checking miners as sometimes they have good stuff.

I personally prefer 'Red Rover' over others, they do get little sweeter but still have sweet sour flavor which I love , they are also noticebly bigger ..

That rover looks like an edulis with a bit of flavicarpa crossed in. Dark flavicarpas get their skin colour from edulis crossed in even if it is a small amount of their genetic make-up. It would be good if they were crossed much more and you could choose one to suit your climate based on the proportion of one or the other along a spectrum between pure edulis and pure flavicarpa.
