Do Garcinia Trees Have Invasive Roots?
« on: March 22, 2019, 02:39:42 PM »
I was thinking of planting a new world garcinia, like a lucs garcinia, g. humilis, or g. brasilensis right up next to the house.

Is this a bad idea? What sort of root damage can a garcinia do?

Would not worry about root damage. Instead, I'd worry about the converse -- high pH soil next to the home's footer (which is concrete) affecting the garcinia.

I concur with Jeff. Garcinia root systems are laughable. Ph, lots of water, and SHADE...side note: set a reminder to join AARP once it fruits :). Good luck

Lots are slow starters but Achacharu and g. intermedia don’t take so long.
Garcinias can have long branches, maybe they would hit the house before the roots!

g intermedia can fruit in 2 - 3 years, but achachairus here seem to be 8 years plus.

Recommended spacing is 30 feet for Achachairu they grow wider than taller so while it might grow they prefer wider spacing.. Here are mature trees in an orchard environment to see what they really want.

The slow speed really seems related to a flush resulting in only one new pair of leaves each branch. If a way could be found to get more frequent flushes these might be speeded up. Does anybody know what makes them flush?

Wholly cow. 16,000 achacha trees? I can't even count that high.

I think it is an exclusive deal for the one orchard, they pack ship and even export. Not sure how they control others from growing them, maybe market is cornered somehow?
Edit, orchard is for sale and has a monopoly till 2035:
