Tropical Fruit Discussion / Do you remove insect damaged leaves?

When you guys buy a new plant do you remove insect damaged or damaged leaves at all?

So I recently bought a Glenn mango tree from La Verne Nursery.

La Verne Nursery is a wholeseller. http://www.lavernenursery.com/

Anywho, upon doing some research I came upon this: La verne uses Manilla mango as the rootstock. http://www.cloudforest.com/cafe/forum/32850.html Last post.

Heres the high graft. maybe one and a half feet tall up the tree. It's in the middle of the green tape.

There are Manilla leaves below the graft. Normally I would remove any leaves below the graft but I saw this.

Looks to be a Manilla branching out. This got me thinking. What if I let this Manilla branch out and have two mango trees? What do you guys think? Should I remove the leaves or experiment and let them grow?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee suckers?
« on: August 03, 2012, 12:23:00 AM »
So I have an airlayered lychee plant and I decided to look into the pot and lo and behold I see what appears to be a sucker.

1. Has this happened to anybody else?
2. Should I rip it out or let it grow? I'm thinking of letting it grow.
I haven't thrown any lychee seeds in this pot so i'm assuming this is coming up from the root. I forgot which variety this was.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Xenos fruit trees in So Cal!
« on: July 14, 2012, 12:50:38 AM »
Just thought I'd share with you guys, and provide proof, of what fruit trees I am currently growing. Advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. :D
First: The tropicals. I have an unknown variety longan. Grafted. A small tomato plant and parsley keep it company.

Above image of tree show some leaf burn. It's only on a couple of leaves.

Maybe you guys could name my variety! Here a comparison between the new leaves its pushing out.

Last years growth.

Angel Red Pomegranate

Wonderful Pomegranate. This is a Lowes purchase. I give it 2-3 years. If it doesn't produce fruit, I'm yanking it out.

Wonderful Pomegranate planted in the ground. Lowes purchase. 3x the amount of growth compared to the plant above. Bought them at the same time. $6 each for both pomes I believe.

BIG JIM Loquat! Was originally in the ground. Placed it in the pot because I realized that i'd be the only one eating the fruit and would rather plant something in the ground that the whole family would enjoy. Excited for this plant though!

2 white and two red/pink dragonfruits in the same pot. Garlic chives are keeping them company. If you are an asian man who sold dragonfruit cuttings in San Diego at a giant swap meet about a year ago with whom appeared to be your wife these are your cuttings! They sold me 5 cuttings for $2 total. Sadly 1 cutting kinda died. (Planted it in backwards. 6 months later no new growth. Ripped cutting in half and stuck one part in dirt. That part produced a root.)

Most recent purchase! Kajang starfruit! Located in a corner of the house where there is the least amount of wind. Shady area though. Are leaves supposed to be curly and dry-ish?

Unknown variety guava plant. The Mimosa guy told me its a giant green type.

Pink Satin Pomegranate. No new growth since I bought it three months ago. It was on clearance. :/

Black Pearl Wax Jambu. Gets about 4 hours of pure sunlight. In a non windy place.

Apologize in advance but these are my terrible photos of my lychee trees. I couldn't remove my wind guard. Too lazy to.
Brewster in a large 24 inch container. Heres the wind guard.

Brewster lychee bought off Ebay. No new leaf growth but tons of root growth. About 1 foot tall. Help: Two of my leaves have this wet gooey black sludge on it's leaves. Is this a bad sign?

Hak ip container.

Terrible above photo of my Hak ip. Sorry but i'll get a better photo soon. About a foot tall.

Mauritius Lychee. In the shape of a y. Leaves are getting dry and crinkly. Should I water it? Feed it fish fertilizer?
